"Alex?" Nat looked over at his paling brother. "Dude you okay?"
"I just feel…feel a bit…"
"Alex!" Nat yelled catching his younger brother. "Alex? Alex stay with me!"
"Honey look!"
"Oh my…"
"Alex!"
"Alex?"
Alex stirred. His eye lids felt too heavy to lift. The voices seemed so close, so loud; he tried to open his eyes and succeeded for only a second before being blinded by a white light. Hs eyes snapped shut and the darkness returned.
After a few minutes he tried once more. A blur of faces greeted him and slowly they began to become clear. There stood his dad, what he assumed was a doctor, Juanita and a woman he didn't recognize.
"What's…going on?" Alex croaked before spluttering his guts out in a fit of coughs.
"My name is Dr. Wright and can I confirm your name please?"
"Alex" Alex began to become very self aware, noticing the tubes around and in him.
"Alex, can you tell me anything that you remember?" The doctor asked softly.
"I'm not sure. I…well we…"
"We?" The doctor repeated.
"Me and Nat, We were waiting to go on stage to perform my new song but I felt kinda weird. Next thing I knew I fell and then I woke up here" Alex recalled, all the time watching the Doctor frown at him.
"Doctor what does this mean?" His dad asked anxiously.
The doctor signaled for him to hush before turning his attention back on Alex.
"Alex, who's Nat?"
Alex laughed what a stupid question. "Duh, my brother!"
"Alex you don't have a brother." His father said taking his hand. "One year ago you were involved in a car accident, you were hit and you ended up in a coma." His father welled up and the strange women put a comforting hand on his shoulder.
"Is this some kind of sick joke?" Alex yelled weakly, pulling his hand from his dad's grasp.
"Juanita! Where's Nat? Where's my brother?" Alex cried desperately.
Juanita shook her head. "You don't have one."
Alex's heart filled with confusion, they all sound so serious but they had to lying.
"Yes I do!" He found himself becoming squeakier by the word. "He's older, taller, sings and is half as good lucking as me!" He wailed.
The women went over to him. "Shush honey…its ok I'm here, we're all here for you"
"I don't even know you" Alex shouted as he frantically kicked and punched trying to get up but it was no use he was very weak. The woman however looked taken aback with sadness.
"Alex you have to calm down" The doctor said sternly.
"NO! I want Nat! I need Nat…" By now he was in hysterics and started to hyperventilate then it all went dark.
"Doc, what's going on? Why doesn't he remember his own mother?" Mr Wolff asked.
"I'm not sure. A coma affects many people in different ways, for instance a patient may create this pretense that they are living yet this world ceases to exist except in their head which appears to be the case here" She explained.
Mr Wolff looked at his stricken wife. "I don't think my wife fully understands"
"Damn right I don't!" She shrieked. "Michael my own child doesn't recognize me and do you know what that feels like for a mother? Of course you don't because he remembers you. One year I've waited to see my baby boy open his eyes and…and…"
"Polly…" Michael wrapped his arms around her as she wept on his shoulder.
"What happens next?" Juanita asked looking at the boy she once knew so well, know so lost.
"We wait and we see" She replied before leaving the room.
For know Alex's life had been shattered.
