Darla's Fall
This story takes place after Alex meets Darla and she does his stitches after getting hurt in a fight with Target.
"Darla, are you here," exclaims Alex, as he wakes up in Darla's home. He was asleep for an hour after Darla finished the stitches on his side.
"I'm right here," says Darla as she enters the room to inspect Alex's wound. "Are you ready to help remove the ash over the corn in the field? Mom and I need help. You might not be feeling great, but it would be nice if you helped us."
"I guess I can help, just don't make it too rough," moans Alex.
They head out to the corn field and they each grab one shovel. While they shovel, Alex and Gloria Edmunds, Darla's mom, hear a scream. They find Darla lying on the floor not far from where they were shovelling.
Darla was moaning and holding her leg. Alex quickly runs down the hill to see what had happened. "What happened, how did you end up down here?"
Darla replies, "I was shovelling and fell through a thin layer of ash."
"Ms Edmunds," says the 17 year old, "we need to get Darla back up into the house to help her wounds. I might not know how to stitch, but I can surely keep her leg straight."
"Keeping her leg straight might not work but it's all we can do. I might have some mesh inside the house that we can wrap around her leg to make it heal quicker. Alex, this also means that you will have to do more work with your hurt side."
"I know Miss Edmunds. I have to let Darla heal because she can't work with a broken leg," Alex sighed.
"I can help make corn pone, all it takes is corn and a fire," whispered Darla.
They all made it up the hill safely while Gloria let her daughter lean on her shoulder. Alex was still struggling to be able to walk.
Finally, they made it back up to the house and Darla's mother brought Alex the extra mesh he needed to wrap Darla's leg around.
