*March, 2014 update - I went over the story and realized that I could expand on certain parts of the story to make it better, so I will be redoing the first 5 chapters to include more detail to make this a better story. I am still working on this, so to those who have been waiting for an update, please anticipate it. I have been working on the next chapter, but this is my final year in university, so I am getting swamped with school. Please understand. *
Disclaimer: I OWN NOTHING! If I did, Klaus and Caroline would be together forever and always. Hayley would not be pregnant. Katherine would still be a vampire and happy with Elijah. Matt and Rebekah would be happy together as well. Kol would still be alive and well, making his sarcastic comments. Anna would still be alive and with Jeremy. Let's not comment on the Stelena vs. Delena story though, I can't decide between those two. :P
AN: Hi, everyone, this is my first TVD story and I've got a plot planned out. As a matter of fact, I've got down a couple of chapters. I fully intend to finish this one, because I certainly don't like where things are going for our couple on TVD/TO.
So, my story is set after the season 4 finale. Caroline finds out about the baby, which was one of my biggest problems with the show. How could they disregard Klaus not telling Caroline about the baby. Seriously, I would not be okay with a man telling me he intends to be my last love and then not telling me about a baby mama. Hence, my take on this story. Hopefully, you`ll enjoy my take on what should happen. I will try to stick with what happens on the show for a while and then most likely go my own way (since I'm not exactly watching both shows religiously anymore).
I leave the possibility of going dark on this story, but I`m not sure yet. I`ve got the idea in my head, but I`m not sure how well it will translate onto words. And so, without further ado, I give you the start of my story.
Prologue
The summer was over and the world was not all right. Bonnie had mysteriously disappeared. Tyler was off in some woods instead of coming back to her even though he could. Matt was off in Europe with the Original sister. Elena was off with Damon. Stefan had gone off soul-searching. Klaus... wait Klaus... no, she wasn't going to think about that lying hybrid!
While all the members of the Mystic Falls' Scooby Doo gang were off doing their own things, Caroline was left all alone. Her summer after graduation was supposed to be fun, and filled with memories of her two best friends having countless sleepovers and fussing over what delicious boys they would meet in their freshmen year (boyfriend or no boyfriend). Instead, Caroline was the only one in Mystic Falls and the only one who was even planning for college. Why? How? Why and how on Earth did this happen?!
"Caroline, I'm off to work," yelled Liz, "Will you be all by yourself?"
"Yeah, I'll be fine, mom," as Caroline stuffed another dress into her suitcase. Her room was almost empty safe for a couple of items she didn't plan on taking with her to college. She heard the door close and Caroline sighed a breathe of relief.
No one had any idea how hard Caroline constantly pulls herself together. Acting as human as possible to appease her mother. Being the friend that is always there. Putting everyone else in front of herself. Fighting just to not shut off her feelings. Constantly pulling herself back from falling over the edge. Every other vampire she'd known had done it, but Caroline was quite sure no one would go to the same depths for her, as they did for Elena, Stefan, or even Damon. No one every put her first – she wasn't anybody's love, and she wasn't anybody's sibling.
No, she was always the one left behind, while everyone else moved on. Just like when her father left both her and her mother. Her father had Stephen. Her mother had work. Caroline? Caroline was a scared little girl who didn't know better and had no idea why her family was different from everyone else's.
Angrily, she stuffed another dress into her suitcase. Her phone started to ring and from the special ringtone, she already knew who it was. The big bad hybrid. She made the mistake of answering his phone call once accidentally and decided to give his phone number the special song of "Devil in Disguise." Bite her - pun intended!
The last words he said to her, "I intend to be your last." Pft, what a load of crap! Who on earth goes and sleep with another woman when they were pining for their eternal love. She should have known better than to believe Klaus' words – afterall, hadn't his reputation preceded him. For certain, a thousand-year-old vampire wouldn't see anything in a mere 18-year-old vampire.
No, they never want her. She'll always be second-choice. Collateral damage. That's all she'll ever be and that's why she's leaving this small town.
Klaus may have been a liar, a deceiver, and a trickster, but he was right about one thing. She was strong. She was fearless. And she certainly was ageless. This small town life isn't for her. That's why she is leaving, with the other or not. She's going to go to college, experience the one-time human life that she can afford to have with her mother still alive (with her eternal 17-year-old body) and then she was going to experience the world her own way. Rome, Tokyo, Paris. She'll outdo those. She'll climb Mount Everest. She'll sail the open seas. She doesn't need a may to show her the history of the human world. She'll make her own and nobody was stopping her.
Caroline zipped up the last of her suitcase, readying to throw them into her car and on her way to college.
Klaus sighed and hung up his phone. He hadn't talked to Caroline since he left Mystic Falls. She hadn't picked up his phone calls, safe that one time. He had a sneaking suspicion that someone must have told her about Hayley and he just wanted to make sure she knew that Hayley meant nothing to him. She just had to know that nothing was more important than her – that he would lay the world at her feet.
The door banged and he heard Elijah walking down the hallway towards his study.
"Hello, brother"
Klaus nodded. "Anything? What did those witches say?"
"The baby is doing fine. They say they'll keep her safe as long as you keep up your end of the bargain - getting rid of Marcel."
Klaus gave a look of indifference and went back to the books he had in front of him.
"Are you not worried at all?"
"They are threatening me with a woman that I do not care about and she is carrying a child that I need not have. Should I be worried?"
"It is your child, Niklaus," Elijah interrupted.
Raising his hand with his cup of bourbon, Klaus continued, "I do however need them to take down Marcel, so I shall tolerate them. Need I remind you that I am immortal and have no need for an heir, so what good will a child do me?"
Elijah sighed, "Niklaus, I would hope that news of this child would bring back your humanity."
Klaus scoffed, "Elijah, you are a fool if you think I would return to my weaker moments in such our long history of life."
"And we are not weak, I believe was what you once told me, brother" Elijah responded.
"Glad to know you remember, brother," replied Klaus with an air of finality.
Elijah walked over to where Klaus' sketchpad laid. "Then what about her? If love is such a weakness, why continue to draw her eyes, her smile, her face, her..."
"ENOUGH, ELIJAH"
"So, I have struck a chord? I believe she is Elena's best friend, Ca..."
"I SAID ENOUGH! SHE DOES NOT BELONG IN THIS WORLD! NOT yet... she is still innocent in the ways of a vampire. She will not understand the brutality that must take place in our war to win back what is ours. If you want to see that inkling of my humanity, I suggest you keep your mouth shut and not bring her up again."
Elijah nodded. He understood exactly what that meant. Klaus may not say it in so many words and Elijah doubt he would ever do so, but in not saying so and in being so protective of even mentioning her, it showed exactly how much Niklaus cared for the blonde vampire. As long as there was hope for his little brother, Elijah would remain hopeful in seeing the man Niklaus once was.
"Ok, well onto matters of the day then," said Elijah as he moved to stand across from Klaus.
Outside the doors of Klaus' study, a woman slowly and quietly moved away with an eerie smirk. Looks like Niklaus Mikaelson had a weakness after all – a weakness that can be exploited.
March, 2014 update: Soooooo... little changes here and there. Obviously the following chapters will also change to give the story a better standing ground. Please continue to support, follow, and review. :) Cheers!
