Chapter 1: A cure, a curse

Lalna's POV

"Damn it!" I screamed sweeping all the lab equipment from the table onto the floor. "Why won't it work!?" I grabbed at my hair and rested my head on the table. I'd been trying for three years, October 15th 2013, three whole years wasted trying to cure the flux and instead of progress I was slowly slipping backwards, her condition worsening... Nano. I sighed and slid to the floor legs tucked to my chest, spine resting against the cool sides of the counter. I let my arms fall limp and tilted my head back to look at the ceiling. I don't know how many times I had prayed to that ceiling, praying I could find a cure, praying she'd get better, praying she'd wake up. My head fell forwards into my now raised hands to cover my face, at least no one would be able to see me cry.

Lalna's POV

I swept the last of the glass shards into the dustpan and placed it in the bin. I was looking around the room to see if I had missed anything when I saw the glowing purple puddle by the corner. My eyes snapped open to the size of saucers and let the broom fall from my hands. In a split second I was running through the halls throwing testificates out of the way. After Nano had slipped into her flux-induced coma I had begged Xephos to let me bring her to Yoglabs and to this day I still don't know why he let me, and yet after a year here I was no closer to understanding him as I was to a cure. As I raced down a particularly long corridor I saw Xephos himself talking to one of the head scientists but he lifted his head from his notebook when he heard me pass. His expression upon seeing me was instantly that of irritation but changed to a mixture of sympathy and worry when he saw my panicked expression in turn. I turned my head and kept running only to hear a second set of footsteps coming up behind me. Looking back in confusion I saw Xephos with a look of pure determination printed clearly on his face, seeing me looking back at him he nodded once at me and kept running. I looked away and with renewed energy sprinted for the stairs.
