Moonlight flickered and mirrored off of the ever moving surface of the water nearby. Its surface was disturbed with every swish and glide of the bodies swimming within its depths.
Laughter filled the still air, swirling with the sound of slowly whooshing waves over nearby rocks and swishes of water being tossed and thrown around as a small water fight broke out.
Todoroki sat off to the side on of the rocks sticking up out of the Ocean, silently watching the group splashing around a few feet away. The water was up to his shins, he kicked them through the wetness slowly, back and forth in a gentle rhythm, until his toes began to poke out of the surface. His eyes were slowly getting dry from his spacing out staring, an oddity for him but the relaxing atmosphere was also an oddity for them.
They'd all received a day off and a trip to the beach somehow came out of it. Todoroki suspected it was the girls idea since Tsuyu had brought up a summer trip her family had taken when she was kid. All the girls had swarmed around her asking questions and sharing their own memories of trips to the water.
"You okay?"
"Oh," he blinked a few times, coming out of his startled thoughts before turning towards the soft voice that had spoken to him. Momo was wading gently in the water to his left, looking up at him with a slight turn to her head. Her long black hair flowing around her like a thick blanket, water droplets visibly dropping down her face and neck. Todoroki watched as one slipped from her hairline, staining her forehead, trailing down the side of her nose and then escaping over her lips till it ran to her chin and slowly dripped off. One of her hands slid up from the water and brushed some of the stray hairs away from her face.
"Alright, fine. It's fine, you don't have to talk to me," he realized he hadn't responded to her question, instead had just blatantly stared at her. He released a barely audible sigh. It's not like he didn't want to talk to her, he actually kind of grew to like her over time.
"Want to see something awesome?" Momo's eyes almost sparkled in excitement as she asked him. If it had been last year when they'd just started at U.A. he'd probably have said no, brushed her off immediately, maybe even ignored her. But, somehow, he's opened up a bit to everyone. It had happened without him realizing it. Slowly crept up on him and now, he found himself with, I guess you could say, friends. So without really thinking, his mouth opened and reacted as words spilled out quietly.
"Sure?" grinning widely up at him she raised a hand out from the water towards him. He froze, taking a few moments to eyes her suspiciously. She kept grinning at him, not offended at his expression or hesitancy at all, hand raised above the waters surface as little droplets ran down it and back into the Ocean. His duo colored eyes began sweeping over her again without really cluing into what he was doing. Enjoying the way the moonlight lit up each sharp line of her features, highlighting the color of her eyes in a way that made them look like they were glowing just as brightly as her skin. A fleeting thought of how pretty she looked in moonlight crossed through his mind like a bullet.
Todoroki looked away when he felt his face begin to heat up ever so slightly. Momo also felt her own face warm in a blush but her grin turned into a soft smile, eyes squinting closed a bit as she felt happy at the attention but it was still a bit embarrassing. He obviously wasn't wasn't aware of how intense his stares were most of the time.
After another moment his hand slid into hers as he pushed himself off of the rock. Gravity forced him under for a second but Momo kicked and held strong to not only keep herself up but help bring him back above the surface in a few seconds. He brushed his wet hair from his face and nodded at her, silently saying he was ready to go see whatever it was she wanted to show him.
They didn't go far, maybe another foot or so into the deeper depths away from the group, who was now playing chicken or wading out of the water, probably to start up the bonfire as planned now that it was dark enough out, before she stopped gently tugging him along. They were by a cluster of large rocks which kind of blocked them from the others view. They wouldn't notice them over there unless someone was looking for them.
"Okay, take a deep breath, keep your eyes open and try to stay under," his eyebrows drew together slightly but again he nodded. They both sucked in a deep breath, using one of the rocks as leverage, and plunged themselves as deep as they could go. Once submerged they released each others hands and rolled their arms up to keep themselves pushed under.
The moonlight reflected light through the water and illuminated the bottom more than he thought it would. It burned his eyes a bit to keep them open, but the beautiful, if mostly barren, view somehow made it worth it. Blinking a couple times to try to get rid of some of the sensation Todoroki swiveled his head back and forth, taking in the sight while rotating his arms to keep him under.
The sand below glowed blue where the moonlight actually touched it, the rest looked like black abyss waiting to swallow everything up. It vaguely reminded him of Thirteen.
Ever so slowly, his lips lifted up into a smile. It felt weird, if he's being honest, at how easy the smile seemed to grow the more he looked around.
Momo watched Todoroki as his face changed drastically. Watched as the smile grew on his face until it reached his eyes, the mix of moonlight and the brightness of the smile making them glow. Such a small change on anyone else that most wouldn't even notice, but it was so huge on him that it caused her heart to skip and thump heavily in her chest. She figured he would enjoy the beautiful view under here, but she didn't think he would enjoy it that much.
His eyes met hers. They had drifted apart when they'd gone under, but somehow had drawn close again the longer they remained down there. Todoroki's smile slipped until it was almost gone as they watched each other, Momo found she already missed it but was also glad he'd felt comfortable enough to allow her to see it. Even if it was for only a second.
When their lungs burned from lack of air they surfaced, breathed air back into them in hard, long inhales and exhales until the ache left. Without words they broke through the surface again, diving back under in another deep holding breath. They were so close that their arms brushed and bumped together as they drove their bodies under the water until their feet were almost touching the sandy bottom. It wasn't until then that they moved in the rest of the way.
Momo's hands came up to cup Todoroki's face, he continued moving his arms to keep them under, and their eyes drifted shut as their faces drew together. It was Todoroki's first kiss, and it was awkward and his lungs screamed for air and it was extremely painful when their noses bashed together. But, for whatever reason, he thought that it was exactly what he could have wanted in a first kiss. It wasn't perfect, by any means, but it felt… right?
The whole thing was over in seconds, although it felt like a few minutes, probably due to the lack of oxygen. They surfaced by bending their knees and pushing up off of the sand. When they were above the surface line again Todoroki noticed the others were all by a well lit fire now, only him and Momo remained in the water.
Their eyes connected once more, a short stare, his lip twitching upward for just the barest of a second, before they turned and swan side by side for the shore.
Later that night while they sat together by the fire, Momo shared her blanket with him. Underneath their hands found each other and their fingers linked together.
