Numb

He was numb. His five senses shut down on him-actually, he shut them down himself. He could taste the bile that was rising up his throat. He couldn't hear the rest of his surviving friends approaching hi-them. He couldn't smell the scarlet liquid with the coppery tang that should hit him like a bag of bricks. He couldn't see the descending sun in the orange sky or the calm forest around him, only the pink-haired girl in his arms. He couldn't feel anything, not a thing.

Tatsumi was numb.

His green eyes were dark and blank, dull and emotionless. Both were set on the girl's paling face. He gritted his teeth together as her once silky pink locks began losing their shine.

Tatsumi was furious. Extremely, furious. At who? At a bunch of people, Mine included for jumping into a fight like that without a second though. She did have good intentions for it and their mission was completed in the end, but it cost Night Raid two of their own for the prize of Tatsumi and defeating Budo.

Tatsumi was mainly furious at two specifically. One, the capital. It was the root of the corruption and the inner destruction of the country that was leading to the deaths of civilians and the deaths of his friends, new and old. And two, at himself. He couldn't save everyone before. Sheele, Bulat, Chelsea, Luba, Su. Now, Mine was added to his list.

All he could think of was I couldn't protect her. I couldn't save Mine. His most precious person in the world.

Though he was furious, the young brunet was more sad than angry. He had let her die in his arms. He couldn't protect the person he told he wouldn't let anyone die. He told her that. Yet, he let that very person die…Die for him.

This is the life of assassins, of killers. It is to be expected in their line of work. Kill or be killed. No matter what, death always lingered in the back of their minds. But, Tatsumi didn't want death to find his friends. To find Mine, not yet. It was too soon. Much too soon.

As his body turned numb and his childish face was replaced with a hard empty glare of a man who had suffered time and time again, Tatsumi let her final words ran in his mind:

I love you.

I love you too Mine. Wait for me, I'll end this soon.
