80. Why

Bumblebee sulked around base, upset that Raf had… ditched him to go hand out with Miko and Jack to go see some rock concert. They were all invited, sure, but Bumblebee couldn't get into what the humans referred to as "screamo" metal. Normally Raf would agree with him, but this time he went. He was probably with that snobby human girl too, Latisha or whatever her name was. She was mean to both Raf and Bumblebee, and the small yellow 'bot couldn't help but wonder what on Earth Raf saw in this girl. But his human companion was entering his teen-years, and Bumblebee knew that Raf's wants and needs were rapidly changing as he turned from the world of science to the world of human women.

Bumblebee felt himself sigh slightly, knowing that Raf would not have been 12 forever. He had grown quite fond of the mechanically inclined child, and was shocked when he could actually understand Bumblebee and his little chirps. He really had grown close to the kid, and seeing him grow up so fast saddened him slightly. So the scout sat in the Autobot base's "living room" as he flicked through the television channels.

It had been several years since the Autobots had crash landed on Earth, and after they had established themselves as valuable allies to the humans, they had allowed them to stay in an abandoned missile silo base in Jasper, Nevada. Of course, when they first quote-on-quote moved in, the place was empty save for several raised levels and old Earth computer technology. The Autobots had fixed that situation quickly, implanting as much Cybertronian tech in as they could, however it wasn't perfect, and it still retained plenty of its earthen counterpart's roots. It wasn't a real shocker that Ratchet hated the damn thing. But as the years stretched on, they were able to make the silo a little more cozy, as well as kid-friendly for the 'bot's human companions.

Bumblebee sighed again as he came across some cartoon channel he and Raf used to watch after school. Life was simpler back then – Raf content with hanging out with Bumblebee, talking away about nothing important as the two of them would chitter away and laugh at something they knew no one else would understand but them. And it hurt Bumblebee knowing that all of that was fading away as Raf aged. Sure, they still hung out, but it wasn't the same anymore. Raf wasn't the same little kid who liked to play racing games and study Cybertronian tech rather than do his actual school homework.

Why did the humans age so quickly? Bumblebee had always wondered, and not just because of the growing distance between him and Raf. In human terms, Bumblebee would technically be considered very youthful, probably somewhere in early adulthood when he and Raf first met. But now, as Bumblebee stayed in a perpetual child-like state, Raf grew older, as well as Miko and Jack – who were now openly dating, much to everyone's surprise – and Bumblebee felt his connection with Raf slowly fall apart.

He felt an energon tear tickle his cheek, and he whisked it away quickly. But another soon followed in its place, and Bumblebee gave in, allowing himself to cry silent tears of sadness, knowing that Raf would indeed "outgrow" him, their friendship fading like dust in the wind.
