'He is ancient and forever,

He burns at the centre of time

And he can see the turn of the universe'

'He is a monster Martha, causing nothing but death and destruction to everything he touches, to everyone he meets. Turn your back on him and be spared his fate.'

Martha, with Mr Saxon's words ringing in her ears turned to look at the Doctor saw only the man that she had fallen in love with and felt only the despair that came with loving someone so much that it felt as though hot irons were branding her insides and knowing deep in your heart that they do not love you in return.

The Doctor's eyes drilled back into hers and she knew that he was silently pleading with her to escape. To save herself, but Martha was stronger than that, so she raised her head and looked straight at Mr Saxon's cold face. 'I only see the Doctor, the one who sacrifices so much for other and I will die a thousand deaths before I turn my back on him.'

Mr Saxon sneered at her words whilst the Doctor hung his head all the fight leaving him were he was held tightly by henchmen.

'You know he doesn't ,love you Martha no...he loves another and would trade you a thousand times to have just one more moment with her'

'I know' said Martha simply 'but that changes nothing'

The Doctor lifted his head and looked at her with an expression of surprise and gratitude and something more...guilt. Martha held his gaze just long enough for him to see the sad, fleeting smile that came into her eyes before she gave a sudden flying leap and pushed Mr Saxon into the rift flame. He teetered on the edge for a moment, then fell into the dark.

'Quick move from there Martha' screamed the Doctor as Mr Saxon's henchmen fled from the advancing rift flame, but his heart sank as he saw the rift had already started to envelop her. The Doctor looked up at Martha, her face framed by the glow of the pulsing energy of the Rift, a halo of light surrounding her head. She was beautiful and sad and defiant and unrepentant of the sacrifice that she was about to make and he realised that he loved her. She wasn't Rose who he still missed and longed for every second of the day…she was Martha and he hadn't seen how much she had helped him, comforted him, meant to him after Rose had gone., and now he was going to lose her as well.

'Goodbye Doctor' she whispered then there was a silence and when the darkness lifted the rift energy had gone and Martha was lying motionless on the floor.

The Doctor ran up to where she lay and cradled her in his arms. Her eyes flickered open as the Doctor smoothed the hair away from her face. 'Martha…' he began but stopped as he saw she was struggling to speak, he lowered his head to hear her whispered words 'I'm sorry Doctor…my Doctor…I'm sorry I wasn't Rose' Martha's vision clouded and she fell into blackness.

And the Doctor was alone once more.
