Jane peeked her head in the morgue seeing her favorite medical examiner elbow deep in a body cavity. She stood silently watching, observing after all she was a detective. She noticed the way Maura's hair was pulled back in a loose ponytail as not to contaminate evidence. She noticed the way every movement was percise and exact. She liked moments like this when Maura didn't know she was watching her. She leaned against the door frame sighing lightly.

"Knock, knock doc. Whats going on?" Jane asked.

Looking up and giving Jane that smile that was only reserved for her, "Oh Jane I didn't hear you come in. I don't have the report for you yet if thats why your here."

"How come everytime I come down here you assume I want a report? Can't I just come down and see my best friend?"

"Well I suppose Jane although statiscly speaking you almost always want a report." Maura said jokinly. A slight smile played on her lips.

"Well actually I was wondering if you wanted to go to the batting cage tonight after work. Since we have that softball game coming up this weekend I thought I could help you with your swing."

"What's wrong with my swing Jane? Its the perfect form for the right degree of leverage to loft the ball to the proper height to maintain the right distance."

Jane was lost in the google talk that spilled out of Maura's mouth. She loved this about her how she got so caught up in data that she rambled on and on till Jane had to interupt her.

"Uh Maura, thats great but you look goofy standing the way you do and I just thought I could help you "relax" your stance a little. Then after we can get some take out and go back to my place. That is if you don't have plans already."

"Jane of course I would love to go to the batting cage with you. After I finish up this autopsy and clean up I'm all yours." Maura said excitedly.

"Okay great well I'm going to go work on some paperwork, come find me when your done and we'll head out."

Jane strutted out of the morgue in her usual tough as nails swagger that little to her knowledge drove Maura crazy. Jane knew she was in love with her best friend and had been for months. She also knew that she could never let Maura know or it might ruin the best relationship she's ever had with anyone. Little did Jane know a certain medical examiner was watching her walk away.

Maura was in love with Jane and knew that she had been for months. Jane was the only person she's never diagnosed because she loved Jane for all her flaws and scars. She loved the way she used her sarcasm to keep people at arms length. She loved the way once she let someone in she protected them with all her heart. On the outside she protrayed this tough exterior but Maura was one of the few who Jane let see who she really was. Maura loved that side of Jane when they where alone and laughing and Jane was relaxed. She had her suspiciouions that Jane might be in love with her too. She had been conducting little "tests" if you want to call them that. She noted everytime that their glances lingered to long or how often they felt the need to reach out to the other. She had planned on testing her theory a little more and this idea of the batting cage might just be the ticket. Maura finished up her autopsy and cleaned up the morgue, gathering her purse and bag headed toward the elevator.
