"You're about to make a terrible mistake that I can't help you get out of." Hatter told Jack sternly.

"Hatter, she's lost and only wants to get home with her daughter. You don't expect me to just let her fend for herself?"

"Yes, Jack, that's exactly what I expect you to do." Hatter's voice was full of an exasperation that she preferred to keep hidden. "Don't go through The Looking Glass, I know you're planing to try to 'save the day' and 'be the hero', but all you're going to do is get yourself killed!"

"You mean you're going to kill me if I try to help Alice", Hatter could feel her heart aching in her chest, but tried to ignore it.

"You and whoever else tries to get in my way", she said darkly. "You know what I'm capable of, why risk the lives of you and your friends for a girl you only just met?"

Jack ran a hand though his hair before he spoke. "I didn't use to believe in love in first sight, but today I swear my whole world was turned upside down. I'm not just trying to be the hero, I really want to help her. Do you know what it's like when you can tell someone is going to mean something to you the moment that you first lay eyes on them?"

"Yes", she held back the words that she so desperately longed to say. "But that doesn't change anything."

"Why are you doing this? Hurting Alice isn't going to help you take the throne."
"We'll see about that."

"Stop, no more riddles, I want the real answer." Hatter could tell that Jack was holding back the anger that he was feel towards her.

"Alice is a threat to me, you don't understand." Hatter fought to keep her voice steady.

"So you're going to kill her and her daughter?" Hatter didn't answer, but she could tell from the look of horror on Jack's face that her silence spoke louder than words could have. "You're not like this, you're not a murderer!"

"Maybe you don't know me the way you think you do!" Hatter felt as if her heart was bleeding, she wished she could take back the words she had just shouted.
"You're right", Jack took a few steps away from her as he spoke. "I don't know you, not anymore."

Hatter wanted to call out to him as he walked away, but she knew that it wouldn't do any good. He had make his choice, he had chosen his side, and there was nothing she could do about it. He had never cared for her the way she had cared for him. They had been friends, but apparently their friendship wasn't strong enough for, in the end, he had betray her for Alice.

"I'm sorry", Hatter whispered, although she knew that Jack couldn't hear her. He wouldn't hear her even if she had screamed it. He was gone and he wasn't coming back.
