Why did you come here? Satsuki asked.
I'm not a seal anymore, and it was Seishirou-san's wish..
Why do you care about his wish?
Because I loved him. Subaru said. His voice was as emotionless as if he was discussing the buss table.
It doesn't make sense. Satsuki said. How can you, when all he did was to hurt you?
I don't know, I just do.
Why do you let your emotions rule you like this?
You should know I can't answer your questions by now.
I only want to understand why humans act the way they does.
Is that why you are an angel?
No. I have no reason to be an angel, but I have no reason to not be either. I hoped Kamui would ease my boredom. But he didn't.
Isn't there anything you care about?
Satsuki said. And now when Sakurazuka is gone, who do you love?
No one. Subaru admitted.
Maybe we are angels because there is nothing we want to protect. If there was, we would be able to create a kekkai and be seals instead.
What about Yuuto?
There is no such thing as love.
Did he hurt your feelings that deeply?
For a moment something lit up in Satsuki's eyes, but it disappeared in favour of her usual apathy so fast Subaru almost missed it.
I should have known better than to trust him. It only confirmed my view on humanity.
Which is..?
That they mean nothing. I'm a nihilist.
Subaru repeated. I know it is some kind of philosophy, but..
But you dropped out of school?
I would say that I didn't remember, but fine.
One of the many computer screens started to write out something, BEAST apparently wanted to help out.
Nihilism
1.a) the denial of the existence of any basis for knowledge or truth
b) the general rejection of customary beliefs in morality, religion, etc.
2. the belief that there is no meaning or purpose in existence
Is that what you believe in? Subaru asked. It seems.. empty.
You are, were, what the society thinks is a good person. What good did that do you? Satsuki said. There is no justice, and no right or wrong.
How can you be involved in the war for the future of the earth, if you deny all morality and religion? Haven't you chosen side?
It was chosen for me. Our destiny may be foreordained, as Kakyou says, or it may not be decided, as Kotori said. In the end, it doesn't make a difference.
Subaru asked, fascinated against his will.
Because the humanity will be destroyed, if not now later. A comet can hit earth, an atomic war might start, the climate can change until she planet becomes inhabitable. Something will happen, it always does. The dinosaurs reigned over the earth for millions of years, and it meant nothing. The world as we know it will end, and something else will come in it's place. This will go on until the sun collapses and our planet gets destroyed. How arrogant are we to believe the earth's destiny depends on us?
That's.. that's a very unusual way to see it.. Subaru said.
Nothing we do is important and will make a difference. So what is there to live for?
Subaru asked.
I hoped you knew. Satsuki said. If I ever find out, I might not be bored anymore.
