The Shovel Talk
"Don't be such a coward," Roxanne said, laughing at the face of her boyfriend. "It's not like my dad is an ogre or anything!"
Lysander gave her a look, huffing.
Rolling her eyes, she added, "It's not like you've never met him before."
"I wasn't dating his daughter then though," Lysander argued. "And everyone knows how protective he is over you. He's going to hate me on principle."
Knowing that she wasn't going to be able to settle him down, she reopened her book and settled in for the rest of the journey home.
Twenty minutes later, he sat beside her and wrapped his arm around her shoulders, whispering an apology into her hair.
…
"Dad, you know Lysander," Roxanne said, gripping her boyfriend's hand, lest he make a run for it.
"Uh huh," George replied, eyeing Lysander. "I think we need to have a chat, kid."
Roxanne had never seen a face lose colour so fast. She didn't even have change to say anything before George was leading Lysander away from them to a corner of the station.
"Mum," she complained. "He's going to scare him off!"
"How long have you two been dating?" Angelina asked, raising her eyebrow.
"About four months."
"Then if your Father manages to scare him off, he's not the boy you should be dating anyway. Come on sweetie, let's go say hi to the others."
Roxanne was led over to where her Aunts and Uncles were standing. If she was distracted, nobody called her on it.
…
"Ly… are you okay?"
He nodded, his eyes wide. She gripped his hand.
"Are you sure?"
He nodded again.
"He didn't scare you off?"
Lysander blinked, then looked at her properly. "Oh, Rox, no. You're wonderful. I just… that was some shovel talk."
"Shovel talk?"
"Uh huh. You know, the standard, you hurt my daughter and I bury you with my shovel talk. Only…" he cut off with a shudder. "Your dad is a bit more… creative than most."
She tilted her head curiously. "What did he say to you?"
He shook his head. "Doesn't matter. Just… I'm very grateful that I love you too much to hurt you. Because he is scary."
Roxanne snorted, before she kissed his cheek. "Come on, Uncle Harry invited your mum for ice cream with everyone."
…
"The kid looked like he was about to wet his pants," Angelina whispered, amused as she watched Roxanne and Lysander walk in front of them holding hands. "What did you say to him?"
George grinned. "Let's just say that he knows not to mess with Roxie, and leave it at that. Come on, I want ice cream."
