Bumi was trouble for Kya from day one. As an infant he merely hogged all of her parent's attention, but as a few years passed Bumi gave Kya a fate far worse than a busy mother and father(at least in her opinion anyway). That Fate was a job that, for some reason, was just thrust upon her without her consent. That job began with four words that Kya Dreaded to hear fall from Aang or Katara's lips: "Look after your brother." Bumi was a nightmare! How did her parents expect her to look after him when he inherited his father's natural playfulness and curiosity, his uncle's brains, and his namesakes outside of the box thinking? On days he made her feel like she wanted to rip out her hair, she went to talk with her favorite uncle. This was one of those days.
"I don't understand how a six year old can break into the Sky Bison stable's without anyone noticing, Uncle Sokka." Kya let out an exasperated sigh and let her chin rest against her bent knees as she sat in a fetal position in her living room.
"I don't either, Squirt" Replied her uncle with a hearty laugh.
"Why are you laughing?" She fixed Sokka with a piercing glare. "Of all the little brothers in the world why did I get him? I wish I was an only child."
"You sound just like me when I was younger." Sokka said with another laugh. "It's almost ironic"
"What do you mean?" Kya asked.
"Kya, Let me let you in on a little something." Sokka began "I used to hate having a little sibling too. Just like you, I was stuck having to babysit someone I never asked to."
"There's no way my mom was as bad as Bumi!" Kya said Flabbergasted
"No. But sometimes I felt like she was. And the thing is Kya, when my parents told me to 'look after her' they were really telling me that It was my job to protect her when they couldn't. It's your duty as his older sister to protect him. I know you find him annoying, stupid, and to be a pain now but one day he will thank you for it." Sokka's voice was firm as he spoke.
Kya seemed to take a moment to process his words. "I guess you're right."
"The great Wang Fire is always right!" Sokka Declared. "Now you might want to get in your room for a while. My sister is probably ripping Bumi a new one and you should probably delay your own ripping as much as possible."
"Indeed." Kya said with a giggle.
Kya did think that Bumi was all of those things that her uncle described him as. But he was her little brother. And even if he was a pain, she would try to be the best big sister she could.
After all Kya thought as she made her way to her room. Bumi's kind of an idiot. Maybe by protecting him, I will make him less of one.
