"Absolutely not!" Luna said, looking at the four in front of her. They were all silent, three condemning. Godric was looking at her with such sorrow.
"I did nothing of the kind," she said, calmer than before though only barely. People had often called her spacey, dreamy, and otherworldly, and Luna supposed she was. She also had her pride and she wasn't going to let anyone spread such filth about her.
Luna Morgana Lovegood was many things, and one of those was not a traitor.
"Why should we believe you?" Salazar asked haughtily, his gray eyes narrowed and betrayal shining in them. It's a pity, Luna thought suddenly. I always felt that there was so much more to Salazar Slytherin than they said. There was, and I stopped his pride. Unfortunate that I had to fall victim to someone elses.
"Luna," Godric said pleadingly. "These accusations, thrown from Alfred toward you and you volley them back, we know not you to believe."
"Believe!" Rowena said tartly. "Alfred was the first professor at this school! He gained the trust of countless families and was always the best to break the news to the Muggle families. God only knows where we would be without him. And yet, we've only known this woman for a five months! Tell me, Godric, is she really so good that you can't think with your brain?"
"Shut up," Luna said coldly. Rowena Ravenclaw had always been exactly what Luna expected and the exact opposite of it. She liked the woman well enough, though Luna was sad that the Founder of her House was the Founder that Luna liked the least. But Rowena could grate, and right now, Luna didn't want to hear anything from her mouth.
Luna opened her mouth to defend herself, though what she was going to say exactly was unknown. At that moment however, she got the most blinding headache. She screamed and collapsed to her knees. She was aware of hands (Godric's hands) holding her, carrying her. She heard other voice, distantly in the back of her consciousness as she was taken somewhere unknown.
She came around again with a cool cloth against her forehead and she was laying on Godric's bed. The man was sitting next to her, looking at her with such a mournful look that Luna nearly burst into tears. She was stopped by her memories.
She remembered the history of Godric Gryffindor and Salazar Slytherin, their animosity and difference of opinion over how the school should be run that culminated with Salazar leaving Hogwarts. She remembered that. But she also remembered a history that she had never heard before, about how Hogwarts was nearly ruined by a woman named Luna, how she nearly tore about the Founders apart as she seduce Godric Gryffindor and tried to kill Alfred Fenstone, who would later become the first Headmaster of Hogwarts. She and Gryffindor disappeared, and no bodies were ever found.
She remembered wondering what that woman's story was, this woman who shared her name. Well, now she knew.
Just like she knew what she had to do.
"Luna," Godric said, taking her hand. "I don't know why I do, but I believe you. Not Alfred or Rowena or Salazar or Helga, but you."
"Godric," she said, squeezing her hands and blinking away her tears. "I was lying to you. I was-"
"No," Godric said, fiercely, his chocolate brown eyes taking locking onto her gray. "Don't say it. I know it's not the truth."
"But-"
"Listen to me, Luna," Godric told her, keeping their eye contact as tears started to fall from both of theirs. "I believe you. I never quite trusted Alfred. He's a worm that's wiggled his way into Rowena's life and I wish to be rid of him. You might take the blame of this, but you shall not bear all of it for I will be right by your side."
Luna gave a shocked, watery laugh. "I love you," she whispered. "I love you, I love you, and please just know that I love you. So please don't waste your time on me."
"Why?" he asked beseechingly. "I can't think of a better use of it."
"You remember what I told you, when you found me, about how I am not from this time." Godric nodded. Luna gave a deep sigh and licked her lips. "I changed things. Perhaps that was a mistake or perhaps that was the reason I ended up here, but I changed things. And I suddenly . . . remembered, for lack of a better word, what the changes caused. And that's why I must bear this weight alone. I will tell this lie and everyone will believe it's the truth.
"I found a spell that would take me back. For you, I just never used it."
"And for you," Godric said, "I will."
They both disappeared, no bodies ever found.
Luna wondered if this ever crossed anyone's mind.
"I want to meet your friends," Godric continued. "Harry, Hermione, Neville, and Ron. I feel as if they are fine."
"This is a sacrifice," Luna reminded him.
Godric grinned. "I prefer to think of it as an adventure."
