New Pair of Glasses
He brought her a new pair of glasses. She didn't ask where her old ones were; she was happy enough with a new pair, and happier still that he'd been the one to buy them for her. Even though they did look exactly like the old ones.
The truth was, the old ones were still with him. He carried them around: a reminder of his failures and where he'd finally wound up, thanks to her. They were still broken, one lens cracked through. The optometrist had offered to just replaced the lens. He'd told her to order a new pair with the same specs instead.
He brought a case for them too, after he cut his finger on the sharp edges of the crack. They weren't any sort of penitence. Just a reminder.
And nobody knew he had them. Which was just how he wanted it.
