From Within The Shark Cage

A/N: My first fan fiction in ages! I saw Jaws for the first time last night all the way through and I can't believe I haven't already - what an incredible film! :) Well, to cut a long story short, I couldn't sleep until I had written something for it so this is what came of that!

Hope you like! :)

Blue. Everything was blue.

The whole world descended into a muffled and wide expanse down here. So open and exposed but at the same time, so confined, restricted to only the length he could stretch out his hand to. And beyond that, everything was blanketed by some heavy cover, the colours getting darker and darker until they faded into a black swell, rippling and pulsating in the shafts of afternoon sunshine. The only thing with the permission to enter this kingdom now.

He was an intruder. Trespassing.

The water rose and fell. He was lowered further. There was no bottom to these depths. He was suspended in a land that he knew but didn't actually know at all.

A land where everything was blue.

So quiet. Silent. But what was there to hear in a land that knew no sound? Each of senses seemed to be diminishing one by one. No sound. No sight. No smell. Just the feel of metal and the taste of blood and bile, rising in his throat. His feet touched the bottom of the cage as it rocked again in the slow current.

He tried to take a breath but he had forgotten how to.

And then there he was. Arising from the darkness and slicing through it, cutting it in half. The master of the kingdom faced with a jester in his court. He divided the sea and came closer and closer, the waves that separated them shrinking. Curious. Inquisitive.

Vicious.

And he panicked. He tried to shoot but he'd forgotten how to.

The huge head smashed into the cage and it lurched with the huge bulk, straining and groaning in the depths of silence. He fell to the side and the weapon dropped. The creature rose again. It squirmed and writhed and tore through the bars. He rocked furiously, trying to get away but the metal was pressing into his back and he was staring at jaws that were widening into a gaping hole as deep as the oceans from which they rose.

Their eyes met. Black. Lifeless. Merciless.

Another shake and it was like it was getting stronger. The bars were parting, bending to form an entrance for the machine that was going to break him as easily as the cage, and he knew it. They both knew it.

He was a mere toy to the Majesty of the waves yet he still clung on. The world was slowing down, his head swimming, and this was it. The end. Lost to the jaws of this supernatural creation.

They were opening, teeth as large as his head, and he could see himself reflected twice in his eyes. Terrified. Weak. Useless.

He tried to struggle one more time but he'd forgotten how to.

Yet then, everything froze. For a second, could have been one, two, they stared at one another, the cage swinging once, twice, three times. The head, the jaws, the teeth moved again but they couldn't come any closer. The bars would break no more. He was stuck and now, frozen in time, they were nose to nose inside the shark cage.

Move.

He had to move.

The creature tried to snap and shake as he rose above it. Furious, it tossed the cage from side to side and he felt the wave tear right through him as the rocks came closer and closer. They felt rough as he reached them and the hot sensation of blood seeped onto his skin as he ducked behind their gratifying shelter.

All of his senses were returning. The heady rush of fear mixed with adrenaline permeated every one of them.
