Hi Guys! I have submitted several poems, but this is my first time ever submitting a story. So here it is and I hope that you all enjoy!
The Devotion of Life's Family
"My whole life I have been seeking the adventure that would last a life time. As a child I was mesmerized by the stars. I built model solar systems, had glow-in-the-dark stickers of planets, and could tell you every constellation. Not much has changed since then. I grew up, studied harder than most, and my father, during his brief visits home encouraged my interest and desire to roam the galaxy… Yet, even though I have accomplished my life's goals, something is missing.
Why is this? I have achieved my goal: the youngest starship captain ever recorded in Starfleet. I have saved millions of lives and received wide spread recognition for my bravery. Everywhere I look there are people who know my story; everyone would assume this is what I wanted with my life.
When it all started, I wasn't worried about what I was leaving behind; work always came before trying to start a family. But now, as time has passed, I feel as though I missed a crucial part of my life's story. Something is missing from all those reports and news broad-castings. Where is the joy in my life? Where is the comfort and satisfaction; the knowledge of the devotion flowing from the ones you love?"
Jim Kirk sighed and clicked off his recording as his bedroom door hissed open. He didn't say anything as Doctor "Bones" Leonard McCoy stepped into the dimly lit room. Bones eyes quietly scanned the room. Once he was satisfied, he silently walked over to where Jim lay slumped in the couch and put his hand on his friends shoulder.
"It wasn't your fault you know." Bones's voice was tired and sad, but reassuring as he tried comfort his friend. "They chose this life and they knew of the danger when they joined Starfleet."
Jim slowly lifted his eyes to meet McCoy's gaze and open his mouth to reply when once again his door hissed open. The two officers turned and saw a slim silhouette in the shape of a Vulcan standing in the door frame.
"Forgive me gentlemen." Spock stated. "I did not intend to intrude."
"Its fine, Spock." Jim said, his voice tiredly smiling. "Come on in."
Spock gracefully stepped into the room and let the door close behind him. "I came to inquire on how you were doing cap- Jim."
Jim Kirk looked up to give his first officer a tired smile.
"I'll be okay Spock. It's just…those kids had families and people that are waiting for their return. It would have been better if I had died instead, for I have no family waiting for me to come home."
Both Spock and McCoy rose at this statement.
"Now wait just one dammed minute!" McCoy spluttered. "What do you take us for, chopped liver?"
Spock raised an eyebrow, "Doctor, I fail to see how chopped liver is relevant to our current situation."
"Why you pointy eared hobgoblin..."
Jim Kirk smiled as his two friends bickered. Now that he thought about it, maybe he had a family after all. With his two brothers by his side, there truly was a reason to live and complete his life's story.
I would love any reviews you guys throw my way! Remember though, I'm only sixteen and am still learning the rules of writing.
