A/N: So, this is my first Percy Jackson fanfic. It's kind of sad. Sorry. This just popped into my head. Couldn't resist. And please don't criticize the grammar. Sentence fragments and such are intentional for effect. Please read and review, thanks!

This takes place in no particular part of the series. Probably later when Percy and Annabeth are closer.

Disclaimer- I do not own the Percy Jackson series or any characters.

Annabeth's scream was, without doubt, the most horrible thing that he had ever heard. It hit him like a physical force. The sound went through him like a knife, leaving him battered and terrified.

Percy didn't even need to look behind him. He didn't want to. The pain in her blood curdling scream was all it took for him to know that his best friend was dead.

As the world as he knew it collapsed around him, Percy had no choice but to keep fighting. There was nothing he could do at this point. He needed to keep himself alive. Annabeth would never forgive him if he gave up now.

Time seemed to move at the speed of light. The battle was a blur as he fought back the overwhelming emotions that threatened to break through. Percy battled the monsters with fierce intensity, channeling all of his emotions at his adversaries.

The opposing side's numbers were growing thinner and thinner as Percy slashed and hacked at its members, Riptide gleaming wickedly in the weaning sunlight.

At last his enemies were gone. Dead. They had fallen victim to his grief-stricken attacks. As if in a trance, Percy turned and scanned the ground for the body of his friend, horrified at what he may find. It couldn't be true. Annabeth couldn't be dead. She just couldn't be. It was impossible.

And he saw her. His entire world seemed to crash down upon him in that one instant. The image of Annabeth's broken body would forever be burned into his memory. He would see it in his nightmares.

Someone was screaming. A heart wrenching, desperate, half-scream/half-sob. It took Percy a moment to realize that it was him. He was screaming. Who else could it be? No one else was around. Percy fell to his knees next to the body of his comrade, brushing a stray blonde hair out of her peaceful face.

Still crying, he took her in his arms and cradled her, protecting her from further harm. He had failed her. He didn't protect her. He was supposed to protect her!

He had failed. And now she's gone.
