A/N: This plot bunny literally appeared out of nowhere yesterday.  It's not very long, but it is finished, which is an accomplishment of some sort.  (Or so the readers of Interrogations would tell you, lol.)  Thanks to Becky (I think) for telling me not to delete this.  :P

Dependence

You knew the day you met him that he would burn into your soul, be your reason for existing.

For a while anyway.

Your relationship was never just friendship; there was always something more slightly beneath the surface.  Something that no one would comment on for fear of bringing up ideas of protocol and duty, fear of stirring memories of lost loves and how could you have moved on so quickly?

But it was there.  A bit one-sided at first—isn't every relationship?—but the unmentionable spark was there.

Until the pier.

Your hand gripped his for the first time as you stared at the expanse of water before you, and you knew.  He had become a part of your world, and you his.  Life was amazing and wonderful and brilliant and horrible and dreadful and depressing . . . because you couldn't be together.  Not yet.

There were demons that still had to be exorcised, conflicts of interest to be resolved, a disapproving father to be won over.  two out of three isn't bad  You started to believe it would never work out, and even said as much to a friend one night.

And then one day, things changed.  A burden was lifted, lips touched for the first time, and a new phase of your relationship awkwardly began.

You miss those days.

Because ever since you received a voice mail on your cell phone one night, your world has been overturned.  Up is down and left is right and you're not sure who this man, a man who vowed to love, honor, and cherish one woman for the rest of his life, loves anymore.

Maybe you.

Maybe her.

Maybe both of you.  Memories of his past, appreciation for where he is now.  You honestly don't know for sure.

But you're starting to suspect that you know the answer, even if he doesn't.

The way his eyes light up when he subconsciously thinks no one is looking, the slow smile that crosses his face, the way he protects her in a way no one has ever protected you.

You know.

He may love you, does love you.  But not like that.

You're just his wife.
