Complete silence. Make no sudden movements. Zero residual presence.
Snake repeated the rules of sneaking over and over in his mind as he crept
towards his goal.
Another inch forward. He could hear water dripping in the distance. Still no one else around. Sweat began to build up in his headband. "Everything is riding on this," he thought, moving closer. Failure was not an option.
Just then, a light turned on. He gasped in surprise. The light was in another room adjacent to where he now hid. A shadow appeared down the hall. He was a sitting duck in his current position. Options raced through his head. Move to another location? But would he have another shot at his goal if he didn't go for it while he had the chance? Take down the opposition? That could lead to even more complications. He decided to use an old stand-by.
Footsteps sounded on the floor. They were moving closer. Snake cleared his mind. He had to stay calm and maintain complete silence. This had worked in the past. There was no reason why it wouldn't work today. Still, he couldn't help but hold in his breath as he waited to see how it turned out.
The footsteps were closer now. They were inside the same room as Snake. They stopped at the doorway. He heard the sound of a light being flicked on. Then...it became eerily quiet. The water had stopped dripping. The sweat began to run down his forehead and into his eyes. He couldn't afford to move his hand to wipe it away. He had to remain perfectly still.
It was getting unbearably hot. Snake wondered what was going on. Had he been found? If he had, why hadn't the sentry made a move yet? Almost in answer, he heard a man clearing his throat. Snake's heart skipped a beat. It was the moment of truth.
"What's this?" the voice said. "Huh. A cardboard box. Wonder what this is doing here." Snake could hear the person circling his hiding spot underneath the box. He chanced a look out through the handle at his goal. It was so close. Right in front of him. All he needed was to open the door...
The footsteps began to move away towards the exit. Snake let out a sigh of relief. It was almost over. He heard the light flick off. "Guess I'll just go back to bed," the voice said. "Oh, but first..." Before Snake knew what was happening, the person had walked back over and kicked the box off of him.
He was still hunched over in position as he saw the person in front of him. "Snake," the dark figure said. "I know it's late. But you're not getting my pizza." Otacon opened the refrigerator door and took out the pizza box inside. "Go back to bed, Snake. I'll pick up some groceries in the morning." With that, Otacon left and went back to his room.
"Damn," Snake said, rising to his feet. He lit a cigarette. Then it hit him. Raiden had some left over chinese take out. It was time to prepare for a new mission...
