Madge stands in front of me, her soft pale hand clutching my own rough, blistered hand. Her blue eyes hold mine, and she pulls me close.
"I love you," she whispers, as she has done so many times before. But then I see it, the wall of fire behind her. I try to run with her, but my feet are glued.
"Come with me!" I yell. She only shakes her head... And then she disappears in the flames.
My eyes shoot open and I have trouble breathing. Beside me, Aysel groans and then her dark grey eyes open wide.
"What's wrong?" she whispers and sits up, the blankets slipping off her and leaving her naked and exposed in front of me. I've seen it all before, of course. Aysel often comes to my room, or I go to her. But I don't love her. How could I? I love someone else. Always have. Madge. The only girl I couldn't save. I tried... But I couldn't reach her in time. And now she's gone. I look at Aysel, no, I don't love Aysel, and I know she doesn't love me. But in this cruel reality, we supply each other with fake love. It's what we need, we crave it.
"You dreamt about her, didn't you?" she asks.
"About who?" I say, shocked that she knows. I've never told her... How could she have known?
"That girl, the one you loved. The one that died. You talk about her in your sleep." she tells me. I feel bad. I don't love her, but I don't want her to hear me talking about another girl. She doesn't deserve that. '
"I'm sorry," I tell her.
"Don't be, Gale. I know how painful it is." she tells me.
She stands up, and gathers her clothes from the floor where I threw them. She pulls on her pants and shirt. She flips her long hair back so it falls down her back in messy waves. I stand up, pulling on a pair of pants and then go over to her. She's so tiny compared to me. She goes to the door, but turns back to me before leaving.
"Will you love anyone liked you loved that girl?" she asks me. I can't answer.
She walks out, and I sit on the bed. No. I will never love anyone liked I loved Madge. She was my fallen angel. And I lost her when she when she flew away.
