Summary: "We're not the Ministry of Unnecessary Ministries," Schuester said patiently. He laced his fingers together on his desk. "Well we are, but it's more complicated than that. When people and things find themselves unnecessary or redundant or lost, they're often unwanted by society. We collect these things and find them a home. Whether the people, things, and processes are ultimately re-purposed in society or stay here is an unfortunate unknown, but at least they have the chance for something better."

- Ministry of Unwanted Ministries Prologue -
"Can you feel that sweetie?" Elizabeth pressed her son's hand against the door frame tenderly.
The young boy nodded, "Yes Momma."
"I don't just mean the feel of the wood, sweetie. And this is going to be really hard Kurt, but you need to think beyond the texture of the grain and the brush of the lacquer." She gently pulled the small child's hand from the door frame to the open air over the threshold and whispered, "There should be warmth that tickles your hand. I can't explain it more than that. I'm sorry sweetie, but that's the only way I know how to describe it."
The little boy furrowed his eyebrows in frustration, "I can't…"
Elizabeth sighed, and kissed the boy's hair.
"So what does this mean?"
She looked over her shoulder at her companion. "There's still time for him to get it," she replied. The woman stood up and joined him on the other side of the hall.
"Elle…"
"We may need to move her to a hospital," Elizabeth replied sadly. The man remained silent, his eyes flicking to one of the other doors. "There are ways to get her there, we can make it work if it comes to that."
"That's not comforting."
"You could leave her there," she replied sharply. Elizabeth was trying to be accommodating, but it was hard to ignore the mounting anxiety for both of them. She finally sighed, letting go of the tension that grew between them. It was unhealthy for her to be angry with him, and she didn't have the luxury to hold a grudge.
He relaxed, leaning into the wall, "I suppose it doesn't make a difference."
"He'll get it. He will," she promised softly, returning to issue at hand, "But he's too young to really understand, most kids… they just don't start getting these things until they're a few years older. It's too chaotic and uncontrollable right now."
"With you…"
"I know."
"It's asking a lot, but you know I wouldn't ask if I didn't…"
"… Have to. I know. Kurt will get it."
"Could the Gardens teach him?"
"I'm sure they would, despite his age, but I can't ask them. If the Council even hears rumors…" she looked at her son fondly, although her eyes were sad. "The Gardens claim they don't report to the Council, but I'm sorry William, I'm unwilling to take that chance with my son. Not for you, not even for her."
"There has to be something… someone maybe that can…?"
Elizabeth turned to him angrily, but kept her voice down because of her son as she replied, "Do you know anyone else Will? Because I don't."
He raised his hands apologetically, "I know. I know."
"There's no one, Will. At least for now."
The man gave her a tentative smile, "There will be. I won't give up Elle."
"Neither will we," she replied curtly. "Alright… let's try something else sweetie," Elizabeth suggested to her son. She picked the small boy around and twirled him around. "I want you to close your eyes okay?"
She slowly started waltzing back and forth - emphasizing the beat in the whimsical tune she had begun humming.
Kurt giggled but kept his eyes closed. He straightened in Elizabeth's arms, ever the gentleman, pretending that they were dancing properly with one arm on her shoulder and the other outstretched into hers. "One, two, three… One, two, three…" the little boy whispered to himself.
Elizabeth laughed, despite the fact that a moment earlier it had felt as though she had no laughter left. She picked up the tempo and joined in with her son. "One, two, three… ONE, two, three…"
"Wait, wait, Momma!" Kurt interrupted excitedly. He tugged on the sleeve of her gown and looked at her with wide, shining eyes. "Momma I felt it! Ones! It's on the ones!"
The other man smiled hesitantly at the pair.
Elizabeth stole a glance at him before returning to her son with a bright smile, "That's great sweetie! Fantastic!"
The boy wiggled in her arms, eager to get down. "I wanna tell Daddy!"
"Of course, darling," she laughed as she lowered him to the ground. "He'll be so impressed.
