Kaz
He was thinking of her when Rhys knocked on his office's door. It had been 2 months since he last saw her; and more than not he found himself distracted by her absence. Like something was missing in him. The man came in, looking rather startled.
Rhys was a good spider, if not a bit over-enthusiast. He was silent and usually brought in good information. But he wasn't Inej. "Hellgate's been broken out of," he said dryly, as if expecting his words to have an effect. To his credit, Kaz was surprised, very so. He nevertheless stayed silent and Rhys knew he was expecting details.
"Yesterday night, around three in the morning. Seven people have escaped, ten guards' dead. Details are scarce, but apparently it was violent."
"Who?" Kaz replied in his usual rasp.
"Don't know. The stadwatch won't want the details spread. This is the first time this has happened." Kaz supressed a sarcastic remark and asked more questions. Rhys didn't seem to know more than what he already said, so he sent him away. He was right though; this was the first time someone had broken out of Hellgate, and seven people at that. As far as he knew, that was impossible. He'd have to do some digging. If only Inej was here, she would be able to tell him everything about what had happened.
But he couldn't expect that from her. She was happy now, on her boat, raiding the oceans, fighting slavers. He promised himself that next time she asked him to come with her, he would accept. Twice she had, and twice he had found an excuse, but not this time. There was only ever a limit to her patience. And he didn't want her to give up on him. Again, he found himself thinking about her. He stopped abruptly this time. He was being distracted.
Kaz got up, ready to leave. Then he heard it; the subtle sound of someone climbing down the rooftop to his window. A strange feeling of glee spread through his body; there was only one person who knew this path. Something was different though; the footsteps, as quiet as they were, were too loud. This wasn't Inej.
"Hello Mr Brekker," the voice was cold, glassy. A woman appeared at the window. His pistol was immediately pointed at her. She entered anyway. She was tall, her skin a very dark brown; Zemeni, deducted Kaz, and had scars all over her body. The most striking things about her were her dark eyes; Kaz could read no emotion in them; they were blank as hell. Her sharp smile did not reach them. "Will you offer me to sit down or should I take your silence as an invitation?"
She sat on the chair opposing his desk, and waited, staring at him, analysing him. Kaz was wondering why he hadn't shot her yet, but he still sat down, pistol armed. "Who the hell are you?"
"You don't know?" A look of faint surprise passed on her face. "I would have thought that the news would have longed reached the legendary Dirtyhands by now." She leaned in to him and said in a murmur, "I'm Ketterdam's reckoning."
"You broke out of Hellgate." Kaz said, matter of fact-ly.
"At least you catch up quickly." She replied. A silence followed. He made no move to break it. She continued, "I like people who can enjoy silence; they are few at the prison; they always wanted to either fight me or fuck me. I even had to cut one's tongue off."
"What do you want? Miss…?" Kaz asked.
"You can call me Diala. As to what I want… I heard that not so long ago, you had Pekka Rollins at your feet." Kaz nodded. He had made sure that word spread as much as possible about that. And people in the Barrel now walked one foot farther from him. "Where is he?" She said quickly. Kaz heard the want in her voice. He waited a few seconds, replied, "Why would you want to know something like that?"
"Well, it's one of the many things we have in common, Kaz, Jacop Hertzoon." Understanding dawned on his face and he quickly washed it away. "I'm sorry darling, even if I knew I wouldn't tell you?"
"And why is that?"
"For one simple reason, he is mine." He said. Her face betrayed her disappointment. He continued, "Is that all you want?" She got up, walked towards the window then stopped. "I'm also here to warn you. Some terrible things are about to happen. I would suggest you to leave this place as soon as you can. I'm sure your little Suli friend would appreciate some company."
She jumped out of the window, with Kaz dark stare glazing her back.
