Erik rubbed Charles' back, murmuring in his ear, "I'll go get you some tea."

"Erik, I can get it myself; I'm not – "

"No. I've got this. Stay right here, Charles."

"Erik!" Charles protested, watching Erik walk out of the bedroom but too tired to follow. He lay against the propped-up pillows and thought about what Erik would be like as a father, a smile floating across his face.

Erik came back into the room, walking so fast that hot tea spilled over the brim of the mug and burned his hand. He cursed under his breath and promptly covered his mouth with his free hand. "I'm so sorry!"

"Erik, the baby isn't born yet. It can't hear you."

Erik licked the side of the mug and placed it gently into Charles' hands. "How do you know? Our baby's probably a mutant, right?"

"Right…Erik, where are you going with th – "

"He could be like you, Charles. Maybe he can read my mind. Maybe he can hear five thousand miles away… which means he can hear us right now."

"Or she," Charles said quietly. "Or they."

"Right, right. Of course. But do you get what I'm saying?"

Charles sighed. "Yes, I do. But you're getting so paranoid, Erik."

Erik wormed his way behind Charles and began to gently massage his shoulders. "Well, I know what it's like to have loving parents. I just want to do the same for our child."

Charles' shoulders tensed. "And I don't. My parents were never around. Are you saying that I don't want – "

"Of course not, Charles." Erik abandoned his attempt at relaxing Charles and slipped under the covers next to him, kissing his cheek. "You know that's not what I meant."

Charles cast his eyes down into his tea, watching the warm water swirl around in the mug. "I'm so worried, Erik. What if I do what my mother did? What if I'm never there?"

"You are not your mother, Charles. Don't you ever think that. If anything, you learned from her mistakes. You are the kindest, most loving person I have ever known. Why do you think I fell in love with you?"

Charles opened his mouth, but Erik cut him off with a soft kiss. "Look, this baby is going to love you for all he – or she, or they – has got. Every time they get a cut or a bruise – every time their heart gets broken – every time they fall down – we will both be there to pick that child back up. No doubt about it."

Charles smiled. "I guess you're right."

"Damn right I – I mean…darn right I am."

"Erik – "

"Shhh. Just in case." Charles chuckled and moved to get out of bed, but Erik pushed him back down into the pillows. "And in the meantime, Charles, you aren't going anywhere. Our kid might get a scrape or a bruise – I know it's bound to happen – but now way am I letting anything happen to you."
