Starting Over
"Santana! Glad you could make it!"
"Are you kidding? Any excuse to see my perfect little niece, I'll take it," Santana said, hugging her brother. "Where is my little princess?"
"In the den. Come on in."
"Hey Rufio, where did you put the rest of the spinach dip?"
Santana recognized the voice before she saw the face. "Rachel?"
Rachel stopped dead in her tracks. "Santana? What are you doing here?"
"Rufio's my older brother. I'm supposed to be here! What are you doing here?"
"She's Danielle's teacher," Rufio explained.
"No way! Why didn't you tell me?"
"I didn't know you two knew each other," he said. He looked between them, noticing the tension, and said, "You two catch up. I'll go see about the snacks."
The two women stood in the hall, looking anywhere but at each other.
"It's been a while," Santana said finally.
"Five years."
Silence filled the hall again.
"I should go," Rachel said softly.
"No," Santana said, catching her hand. "Wait…. Maybe we could…go get coffee after this? Start over?"
Rachel stared at her for a long moment, then smiled. Nodding, she said, "I'd like that."
