The Fall of Glorfindel

Glorfindel of Gondolin was a noble elf fair

With indigo eyes and golden hair

Dressed in royal garb he was

Riding through the city because

He had to talk with Idril fair

With flowers weaved into her hair

Concerned he was for Eärendil

For he was a babe still

An attack was expected on the city

That would truly be a pity

For Gondolin was magnificent

Gleaming white his state was current

The attack really came

When the skies became aflame

A new day had just begun

When the people began to run

For Morgoth's creatures came ahill

Air was filled with screams real shrill

Fire dragons with orcs and such

Ruined the city very much.

Greatest of terrors were the balrogs there

It became a fiery affaire

Echtelion took out five

When the last one claimed his live

Great was Glorfindel's grieve

But it only was very brief

For people wanted to escape

Into the saver mountain cape

Idril led them with Tuor brave

Eärendil in her arms real save

Glorfindel was in the rear

When he was filled with fear

A balrog came upon them from behind

While others had orcs to mind.

Valiant as the golden one was

He fought the demon on the grass

On a cliff real high

Without even one ally

To help him fight this fiery foe

He began the fight with much woe

The first strike was on Glorfindel's side

When he got the urge to hide

Fear could be seen on his face

When he saw the balrogs mace

Panic began to rise in him

When suddenly his face was grim

Determined to kill the balrog fast

He soon became only too aghast.

The demon growled a mighty roar

So Glorfindel for a while heard no more

The balrog swung his fiery whip

Cutting his foe's face with a snip

He cried out in real pain

Which barely kept him sane

He swiftly blocked the next attack

Which was aimed smartly for his neck

The next attack burned his skin

Which was now to ash akin

Angry he became at the foul scum

Who was ugly and loathsome

He swung his sword at balrog's heart

Which was a point on his part

But it didn't reach the evil thing

With anger he swung a new fling

This proved fatal for the valiant elf

Who sacrifised his inner self

The balrog enveloped him around his midriff

Together they fell off the hight cliff

There, their bodies layed in ruin within

When Thorondor came to save Glorfindel of Gondolin

He took the golden body above

Where Idril tended to him with love

She raised a mound above his head

From which his spirit really had fled

Flowers now ever increase

Where Glorfindel lies in peace.

The End
