Peregrin Took sighed and closed his eyes, leaning back against the headboard, his thoughts troubled. Years had passed since the adventure with the ring and the great eye of Sauron, but Pippin's fears and anxiety lingered on, memories clinging to his brain and burdening his mind. Questions like "What if he could come back?" and "What would he do to us if he did?" clouded his vision on the world and life. Pippin may seem cheerful on the surface, but deep down, he is a bottomless pit of worry, and there is only one person in all of middle-earth who can help with that.
Then came a soft knock on the door, bringing the Hobbit back to reality. He opened his eyes and gave a soft grunt "come in" before the light stepped into the room.
"Do you want some dinner Pip, I was just about to put the kettle on and I thought-"Meriadoc Brandybuck stopped his speech as he saw the look in Pippin's eyes "Pippin, you've been thinking again haven't you" he said sadly.
"I'm sorry Merry, I just can't seem to stop" Pippin bowed his head, ashamed to have disappointed the only one who was trying to help him. Merry sighed and Pippin felt the dip on the mattress and the other Hobbit sat by his legs on the bed.
"Don't apologize Pip, I just wish there was more I could do to help you that's all" Merry said, never breaking eye contact with the younger Hobbit sat in front of him, before reaching for his hand and giving it a reassuring squeeze.
"I know Merry, I am trying, honestly I am"
"I know you are Pippin, and that's all I ask. Come on, you could probably use some fresh air in your lungs after being cooped up in here all day" Merry said standing up and tugging on Pippin's hand, urging him to follow. Pippin smiled and allowed himself to be guided out of their bedroom door and into the garden. Merry sat by the apple tree in their back garden after plucking two fruits from the tree, and looked up, smiling at Pippin. Pippin returned the smile and plonked down next to the older Hobbit as Merry leaned over and pecked him lightly on the forehead; handing Pippin one of the apples.
Biting into the apple, Pippin leaned into Merry's side and closed his eyes.
"It's a good job I've got you ay, Merry, keeping me on track and feeding me" he said dreamily, taking another bite.
Merry smiled sadly and rested his head on top of Pippin's.
"No harm'll come to you while I'm around, my love, there's no doubt about that" Merry said, kissing Pippin's curly hair, and for once, Pippin's sigh was a happy one.
