A/N: This is something I have been trying to write for a while now. It's written from Dr. Lurie's (Butterflied) point of view.
Primum non nocere
Her appearance slightly startles him, but he recovers quick enough for her to notice it. Years of medical training has taught him that. Medical training has taught him so much more, such as "first do no harm".
He has prepared himself for this meeting as he has requested it himself, but nothing could have prepared him for this, for her face. Her face which is so similar to Debbie's. It intrigues him much more than he is willing to admit and suddenly Dr. Grissom's words many months ago get a whole new meaning.
For a second this realization throws him off balance. She on the other hand seems unfazed by his sudden silence, like she seems unfazed by his questions.
She hasn't looked him in the eyes yet. Dr. Grissom has trained her well. Better than he was able to train his surgical intern, he doesn't like to say his name, doesn't like to think it even. He told him he should steer clear from the nurses, ordered him to.
When he saw her, her similarity to Debbie was the first thing he noticed, but very soon after that he noticed something else, something he hasn't been able to lay his finger on quite yet. He can only describe it as some kind of purity that is radiating off of her. That was something Debbie lacked, maybe never even owned and yet he still loved her, he was willing to give up everything to be with her and that is something that differentiates him from Dr. Grissom.
He wonders silently if Dr. Grissom ever changed his mind, if the woman sitting in front of him ever did. He doubts Dr. Grissom did as no man would let his lover near a murderer. Only a man putting his job in front of the only woman he has ever loved is capable of doing that.
He knows Dr. Grissom is watching them through the one sided window, he knows Dr. Grissom is scared he will fall for her, but he never could, she isn't Debbie no matter how much he wishes she was. He wonders if Dr. Grissom fell for Debbie lying there on the cold tiles of the bathroom floor. It is a crazy thought, but isn't everyone a tiny bit crazy?
Dr. Grissom probably was more afraid of not being able to put him behind bars than to lose her to him or maybe he has lost her already? That is an interesting thought, because it probably gives Dr. Grissom more insight into his actions, more understanding of his motives for doing what he did.
This meeting will lead to his incarceration, but it has given him answers to questions he didn't even knew he had. And when they lead him out of the interrogation room he sees the look in Dr. Grissom's eyes which reflect some kind of pity. His eyes reflect the same as he watches CSI Sidle walk into the arms of another man.
They are more alike than either of them thought or maybe more alike than either of them is willing to admit.
