It was a few days after Vin had been reunited with his parents and discovered that Van was his fraternal twin sister. Something had been bugging Zero.
"Hey Vin?" She asked.
"Hi Zero, want to study with me?" Vin smiled, lovestruck.
The group was in the library studying. Well Trixie, Newton, and Vin had been, Zero was doing her exercises before she showed up.
"In a bit." She kissed him on the cheek. "First I've been wondering something."
"What is it?"
"It's about your medallion." Zero sat down next to him. "First of all, I always thought your name was Vincent, not Vinson. However since your dad's name is Vincent I'm guessing the medallion originally belonged to him, which brings up my second question: why did he give it to you?"
"Oh." Vin pulled his medallion out from under his shirt. "Actually I asked my dad about that yesterday. When he was in eighth grade his middle school was putting on these sporting events and he entered every one. He was confident that he was going to win an event, but he didn't win anything. It saddened him so much that his mom took pity on him and gave him this medallion to let him know that he's always 'First Place' in her heart. It became one of his most treasured possessions, and he used to wear it all the time."
"But since you're wearing it now..." Trixie realized. "Wow, your dad really does love you."
"Yeah when he and mom had to give me up he decided to give his medallion to me, as an indirect way of letting me know that I also have a special 'Place' in his heart, and mom's heart too." Vin nodded. "However I had no idea that's what it meant. I originally thought that my parents just bought one of those cheap medallions and gave it to me before giving me away to help them deal with their guilt or something like that. Especially since the message was pretty simple."
"You really did think that your parents probably didn't love you huh?" Newton said sympathetically.
"Well, their giving me up hurt me so much that I never really thought straight about my situation." Vin hung his head sadly.
"Pain can do that to you." Zero agreed. "However we won't be in pain any longer. You have your parents back and a sister as a bonus, and while I still miss my mom I have my dad back and that's good enough for me. And of course we have each other."
"And we always will have each other." Vin now kissed Zero on the cheek. "I love you."
"I love you too." Zero one-armed hugged Vin.
Vin hugged her back, and the four went back to studying.
