Title: Curses
Rating: PG / K+
Word Count: 351
Warning: a bit of cussing, mention of character death
Characters: Shinji, Hisagi, sort of Kensei, mention of Tousen, Mashiro, and Hiyori
Pairing: erm… could be taken as just gen, or could be taken as past Hisagi/Tousen and Hisagi/Kensei, and perhaps future Shinji/Hisagi
Note: Written for cairnsy's prompt of Shinji/Hisagi. After writing it, I found that I like this setup, and so you might see more in this universe at some point.

Shinji doesn't think he believes in curses. Most times when humans believe that someone is cursed, it's often because a Hollow is haunting them, creating misfortune and accidents in their paths. Every Shinigami knows this.

But there's something else many Shinigami begin to see as they grow older, as more people die around them. It's something Shinji Hirako has been seeing far too clearly the last one hundred or so years.

Some people are just fucking unlucky.

Hands jammed into his pockets, Shinji eyes the young man sitting in front of the freshly dug grave. From what he's heard, this man is one of them. Shinji grimaces slightly, and resumes walking, having paused when he'd seen that someone else was at the grave already. The man looks up, obviously sensing his approach.

"Ah, Hirako-san." Hisagi Shuuhei exclaims, scrambling to his feet.

Shinji waves a hand lazily at him. "Yo." He comes to a stop beside Hisagi, his gaze moving to take in the grave.

There is silence for a moment, and he can almost feel Hisagi fidget. "I'll leave." Hisagi murmurs quietly.

"Che. No, you're fine." Shinji shakes his head, blond hair brushing against his chin.

The awkward silence resumes, and Shinji frowns at the grave. Shinji has heard that Hisagi Shuuhei's mentor had been Tousen Kaname, who had fallen in the Winter War, and the other man that Hisagi admired is tattooed plain across his face. He barely resists scowling at the grave. I already had Hiyori to watch over, and you left me Mashiro… I don't need this boy too, you jerk. Why didja have to go and die on us?

But as he glances over at the young man, he knows that despite his complaining, he'll step in. Shinji Hirako may not believe in curses, but he sure as hell believes in loyalty. And besides, he has a feeling that working with Hisagi will be… different… than watching over Hiyori or Mashiro. Who knows?

He grins a bit and reaches up and scratches his head. "Hisagi Shuuhei, right?"

Hisagi glances at him in surprise. "Yes…"

"Fancy a spar?"
