The Surprise Visit

She kept her eyes trained on her feet and played with the hem of her shirt as he opened the door. "Rory?" He questioned, not knowing if he was dreaming or imagining things due to the early hour. "What are you doing here?" She just kept her head down, determined to get herself under control before looking up at him.
Jess shook his head and pinched himself. Ouch. Definitely not dreaming. He lightly cupped her chin and tilted her head up so he could see her face. She closed her eyes, trying to will the tears that were falling to stop. "What happened?" He asked softly "Are you hurt?" She just shook her head no.
He was confused. He hadn't heard from this girl in years and now she was standing in his doorway. He stepped aside saying "Come in." Rory nodded her thanks and went to sit in one of the three mismatched chairs at the kitchen table. "Coffee?" he asked. She smiled at the familiar gesture and replied with an affirmative.
With fresh coffee in front of them and the early morning sun rising, they stared at each other. He waited patiently, somehow knowing she needed to do this on her own time. "He asked me to marry him" She whispered.
He nodded, not quite knowing what to say. "Logan?" he asked. She nodded in reply. Jess was confused. Clearly she had everything she wanted, why was she sitting in his apartment on the eve of her engagement?
"Rory" he started, not quite sure where he was going to go with it "I'm not quite sure why you're here. If you're happy, I'm happy for you. What I don't understand is why you are here if you just got engaged." He looked almost apologetic, hoping that he wasn't hurting her feelings.
Rory sat still with her head down trying to hide the tears rolling down her face.
"I said no" she whispered. His eyes got really big in that moment. "You said no?" She nodded. "And you came here?" she nodded again. He appeared to be deep in thought. He was trying to figure this out. A million questions racing through his mind. Why would she come to him? Why would she say no to the man who she could give her everything?
Shaking his head to clear his thoughts, he asked her the most important question running through his mind. "Why?" She smiled. "I couldn't" she said simply. "You are always on my mind. I constantly question myself asking what you would do. Then when Logan proposed…he's moving to California and wants an avocado tree and guacamole. He wants me to move my whole life around for him. I'm fresh out of Yale and I'm not ready to get married and I want to spend time in Stars Hollow while I figure out what I want to do with my life." She sighed, out of breath.
He smiled at her classic Gilmore monologue. "Ok…" subtly prompting her to continue. "That still doesn't explain why you are here though" he stated. She laughed nervously "I love you" she said simply. "That's why I'm here."
