Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha or any characters in this story.
It was a quiet night in the feudal era. Inuyasha was sitting in his tree, watching Kagome and the others. But the girl he watched most was still awake. Her back was leaning against a tree and her eyes were focused on the fire in front of her. The others of their group were fast asleep but the silence wasn't bad.
"Feh, wench you should be sleeping." Inuyasha whispered as he jumped from the tree and beside Kagome. A small smile broke out on her lips and she shook her head to his advice. He then sat beside her, staring at the fire as well. Its colors were bright and cast shadows on everything around them. The darkness seemed to dance around the calm fire and you could just barely hear the wind whispering lullabies to the resting.
"Well, why aren't you sleeping, like you should be?"His voice was stubborn as usual but there was some concern behind it. It was a minute before Kagome answered but her voice was soft and quiet.
"I think I understand it now." Were the first words she spoke that night. It didn't make much sense to the dog demon but he hoped she would continue. "And while I don't want to accept it, if in the end it happens, I think I'll be able to." And those words made even less sense to the dog demon.
"What are you talking about?" His voice was annoyed and hard but that didn't bother the girl sitting beside him. She was used to his bad moods and everything that came with him.
"I'm talking about you and Kikyo." Inuyasha expected a quiver in her voice or tears in her eyes but there were none. Her small smile was still there and her eyes were still set on the fire. Nor was there any anger in her voice when she said the name.
"Kagome I know that I've done a lot of things but…" He had hushed because Kagome was shaking her head. Her raven hair moved from side to side slightly and her mouth was still curved upward, no hurt evident on her face.
"I'm not saying that I want you to choose between us right now, I'm just saying I understand things better now." Her voice was light and happy. She was content at the moment. "And not only that but I've come to a conclusion."
"What would that be?" Inuyasha voice was soft and he was just glad that she didn't have tears going down her face while talking about his dead ex-girlfriend. Kagome waited to answer him because the night's silence was peaceful and relaxing.
"You and I both know that I don't like when you go to visit her over and over again. But making a huge deal about it will only drive you away from me even further." Kagome paused, taking a deep breath, tears now forming in her eyes. "Your entire life no one has bothered to understand you and all that happened pushed you away from everyone. I don't want to be one of those people Inuyasha. I want to understand you and I don't want to lose you." Tears slowly went down Kagome's face and she buried her head in her hands, quietly crying.
"You won't lose me Kagome." Inuyasha knew he shouldn't make such promises when he didn't even know which woman he wanted but he knew that no matter what he would always be in her life. Gently he wrapped an arm around her shoulder and leaned her onto him. She pulled her face out of her hands and slowly laid her head onto his shoulder, both just staring at the fire.
"No matter what happens, Inuyasha, I accept you for who you are." Kagome whispered. All Inuyasha did was nod his head and pull Kagome closer to him. Then it once again became a quiet night in the feudal era and the girl he watched most was still awake but so was he.
Well that's the end of this chapter. I hope you liked the fluff this created. I'm trying to get past my writers block on some of my other stories so here was a small one for you guys.
