Uncle Adam

Kim snuggled closer into the warms arms wrapped around her, ignoring the world for as long as she could. It had been a long week, having to ride with temporary partners while Sean recovered from his injuries. She also hadn't slept through the night without a nightmare since the incident in the warehouse. Adam had been great, waking up with her when she screamed at night.

Neither of them had a full night's sleep since the incident, which explained why they were both still in bed at eleven on Saturday morning. They had gone out to Molly's last night before returning to her place to get some rest, Kim felt like she could still sleep for hours.

"Darling," Adam's gruff voice called out against her hair. She smiled at the nickname that had become a habit of his recently, "That's your phone, are you on call?"

"No," She answered confused but more awake, "Go back to sleep, I'll see who it is."

Adam rolled over as Kim reached for the phone on her bedside table. She checked the caller id before answering, "Hey, Michelle."

Kim tiptoed out into her living room, "I've been calling you for the past twenty minutes."

"Sorry, I didn't hear my phone, what's up?"

"I was making sure you were still up to watching Zoe this weekend. I know it was a rough week, I could call Mom and Dad…"

Kim silently swore, forgetting that she had told her sister she would watch her niece this weekend. "Mom and Dad went to visit Aunt Karen, of course I'm still up for watching Zoe."

"Are you sure?"

"Positive, bring her by in an hour?"

"Works for me, see you then."

"Bye," She hung up her cellphone, "Crap." She quickly tossed her phone onto the coffee table as she scrambled to tidy her place up. She was digging through the hall closet for Zoe's bedding when Adam found her.

"What's going on?"

Kim turned to find Adam leaning against the wall, "I forgot that I promised my sister I would watch Zoe for the weekend."

"Your niece?" Adam's mind flashed back to the explosion from almost a year ago, the tiny girl with brown hair the same shade as Kim's.

"Yeah, and with everything going on I forgot and she will be her in forty minutes…"

"Whoa, deep breath, Burgess." He approached her, taking the bedding from her hands and placing it on the couch, "You've watched your niece plenty of times."

"Not since…"

"Hey," He moved quickly towards her. He had just managed to get her out of the headspace that she could've done more to prevent what happened to Roman, he was not letting her get lost in the events of last year. "That was a tragedy no one could account for."

"I know," She nodded quickly, "It's just been a long week."

"What do you need done before your niece gets here?"

"I need to shower and change. I should make something for lunch."

He kissed her, pushing her towards the bathroom, "Go, I can handle lunch. Unless, you think it would be better if I left."

She stopped immediately, turning around with a panicked look in her eyes, "No, don't go."

He smiled, "Okay. Go and get ready, I'll handle lunch, darling."

Kim took her time showering before pulling back her wet hair and changing. She wandered into the kitchen to find Adam dressed and at the stove, "What's for lunch?"

"Grilled cheese and tomato soup," He responded, kissing her cheek as she came to stand next to him.

"Who knew he could cook?"

"I can't, but I can heat up Campbell's." She laughed, "How did you sleep?"

"Okay," She responded, "I had a really comfy pillow."

"Glad I could be of assistance," He chuckled as the doorbell rang. He turned off the stove and followed her into the living room.

Kim opened the door to reveal a woman only slightly taller and unmistakably her sister, "Hey, Michelle."

"Kimmy," The woman responded as she led the young girl inside, "Thanks for doing this."

"Anytime," Kim said hugging the small girl, "Hey, Zo."

"Hey, Aunt Kim!"

"We should be back tomorrow afternoon, here is the name of the hotel. I know this has been a long week so thanks again… Well, hello." Michelle stopped as she noticed Adam in the background, "I don't believe we've met, I'm Michelle."

"Adam," Ruzek shook the woman's hand who immediately turned to her sister for further introduction.

"Michelle, this is my boyfriend, Adam Ruzek. Adam, this is my sister, Michelle, and niece, Zoe."

"Hello, Ms. Zoe," Adam said as he got down to the girl's level to shake the girl's hand.

"You are a cop, right? I remember seeing you before with a badge."

"I am," He responded, "Just like your Aunt."

"Mom and Dad will be so pleased," Michelle said in a tone that said they would be anything but pleased. Adam straightened up, feeling deflated but still smiling at the young girl, and realizing then that he didn't know much about Kim's family.

"Cut it out," Kim warned in a dangerous tone Adam rarely heard from her.

"It's your battle," Michelle checked her phone, "I have to get going." She kissed her daughter's cheek, and then Kim's, "Thanks again. Zoe, be good for Aunt Kim and Adam."

Adam wondered if his name sounded like a curse word coming out of Michelle's mouth to anyone else but him, however, he smiled as Kim shut the door behind her

Kim threw Adam an apologetic look as she took her niece's backpack and placed it near the couch, "Adam made some lunch, are you hungry?"

The girl nodded and Adam followed the brunettes into Kim's small kitchen. Kim set Zoe up at the table while Adam began to serve lunch, "Water, Adam?" Kim asked as she dug through her fridge for a juice box for Zoe.

"Thanks, babe." He said as he placed the food down on the table, sitting across from Zoe and leaving the seat between them open for Kim.

Kim placed the drinks down on the table and sat down, "How is school going, Zo?"

"Good," The girl nodded enthusiastically as she took a bite of her sandwich, "I got all As last semester!"

"That's very good, Zoe." Adam smiled as he watched Kim interact with the young girl, surprised when she asked him a question.

"Do you go on patrol with Aunt Kim?"

"No," Adam shook his head, "I'm a detective, but sometimes I'm lucky enough to get to work with your Aunt Kim."

Kim smiled at Adam but it quickly vanished, "Where you with her when she got hurt?"

Adam grasped Kim's hand, preventing her from pulling her hair from behind her ear to cover the bruises on her neck, and squeezed it tight, "No, I wasn't, but your Aunt Kim doesn't need me to save her she saves herself. She is the best cop I know."

"She's the greatest." The little girl agreed enthusiastically as she ate her soup. Kim smiled at Adam who traced her cheek softly with his thumb, "What are we going to do today, Aunt Kim?"

"Well, what do you want to do?"

"I don't know," The girl said with a thoughtful expression on her face.

"I have a plan," Adam announced as he began cleaning up the empty plates.

"Oh, and what is that?" Kim asked as he returned to the girls.

"A surprise, darling."

Kim made sure Zoe was bundled up before putting on her own coat. She went to grab her keys off the hook before Adam held up his, "I'll drive."

"Why can't I drive?"

"You don't know where we are going."

"You could tell me."

"Aunt Kim really doesn't get surprises, does she, Zoe?" The girl laughed as he held open the door to the apartment, Kim stuck her tongue out at him as they passed.

Everyone climbed into Adam's car and he took off, refusing to give Kim any clues to where they were going. However, Kim wasn't annoyed as she enjoyed watching Adam so readily interact with her niece. Adam started an enthusiastic game of I spy with Zoe to pass the time until they reached their destination.

Kim smiled when they parked the car and their destination was revealed, "The aquarium."

"I love the aquarium!" An excited Zoe called from the back seat.

"Shall we?" Adam asked a smiling Kim as he exited the car, opening the back door for Zoe.

"Hold my hand," Kim called to her niece as the crossed the parking lot towards the building. Adam wrapped his arm around her shoulders as they made their way inside.

"Two adults and one child," Adam said to the front desk inside the aquarium pulling out his wallet.

"Adam, I got it…"

"Nonsense," He said as paid for their tickets, "I get to spend the day with two gorgeous girls."

"Thank you," Kim said as they followed an excited Zoe deeper into the aquarium, Adam smiled as he once again wrapped his arms around her shoulders. "So how did you know the aquarium would be such a hit?"

"I'm just that good," Adam said as she rolled her eyes, "Her backpack had sea turtles all over it. She is wearing starfish earrings."

"Nice work, detective." Kim said with a smile, rewarding him with a kiss on the cheek.

Adam did not say no to Zoe once. They watched the movie in the 4D theater. They spent time in the touch tank, Adam jumping behind Kim just as she picked up a crab scaring her half to death. They watched the sea lion show and attended the special behind the scenes talk on sharks.

Kim watched with a smile as Adam got down on Zoe's level as she showed him the puffer fish, "They are my favorite. They get really big and puffy when threatened."

"Really, that's so cool." Adam enthusiastically responded to all her comments from the first tank she dragged him to.

Kim smiled as she watched the pair startled when an elderly woman next to her spoke, "Your family is lovely."

Kim and Adam's eyes met immediately as Kim fumbled, "Oh, no…"

Adam gave a large smile to Kim, who blushed, "Would you mind taking a picture?" He asked holding out his phone.

"Oh, of course!" Adam pulled Kim over to him as the three smiled in front of the puffer fish, "There you go."

"Thank you," Adam said taking his phone back as Kim turned to Zoe.

"Come on, Zo. You wanted to go see the sea turtles again before we left right?"

"Yes!" Zoe exclaimed as she pulled Adam away from the puffer fish and towards the sea turtles, Adam grabbed onto Kim as they passed pulling her along.

The aquarium was close to closing when the trio headed towards the exit, "I have to go to the bathroom, do you have to go, Zoe?"

"No," The girl answered her aunt.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Go ahead," Adam said, "We will wait over here."

Kim left the pair but returned quickly, only to find them missing from where she left them. She wandered a bit, moving closer to the exit when from the corner of the eye she saw them in the gift shop.

"Aunt Kim! Look what Adam got me!" Zoe exclaimed as she carried a giant puffer fish plush towards her aunt.

"Well isn't that nice of him," Kim said as Adam trailed behind the girl with two bags in his hand.

"We didn't forget you," Adam said as he pulled out a sea turtle plush of equal size, "Zoe picked it out."

"Well thank you," She said to the girl as she kissed Adam's cheek.

The three left the aquarium just as it was closing, heading back to the car. Adam put his bags in the back seat along with Zoe before getting into the driver's seat, "Dinner?"

"Sounds good to me," Kim agreed as Zoe nodded.

Adam drove them to a diner not far from Kim's apartment that they had eaten at a few times, and he knew for a fact was Kim's favorite breakfast place. The trio ate dinner and ice cream, which Adam insisted on, before heading back to Kim's apartment.

When they returned to the apartment Kim went with Zoe to help her get ready for bed. Adam flipped through the channels until the girls came back in their pajamas. Adam left the pair curled up on the couch playing a game on Kim's iPad as he went to shower and change himself.

"It's getting close to bedtime," Kim said to Zoe as Adam returned.

"Can we read a book before bed?"

"Sure, which one?"

Zoe turned to Adam, "Can we read the new one?"

"Of course," Adam agreed as he recovered the book they bought at the aquarium from the bags before handing it to the girls.

Kim smiled at him as she opened the book and listened to Zoe reading the story. Adam took the bags and went into the other room.

When Zoe got too tired, Kim took over reading the story until Zoe fell asleep against her. She placed the book on the coffee table smiling as Adam walked in holding something.

"What is that?"

He placed the object on the table as he lifted Zoe off of Kim. Kim pulled back the quilt and Adam laid the girl down, tucking her in. Kim, meanwhile, picked up an object off the table. It was an underwater themes picture frame with the name of the aquarium along the bottom with the picture of the three of them inside.

"I love this," Kim said as she positioned the picture frame on the coffee table.

Adam smiled, "Come on, let's go before we wake her."

Adam went to the bedroom as Kim went to turn off the lights, smiling at a sleeping Zoe who was clutching her puffer fish plush.

It was hours later when Adam woke to a cold space next to him, he sat up only to find Kim sitting at the end of the bed, "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine, go back to sleep."

"Come back to bed." They stare each other down, neither conceding until finally Kim crawls back up and under the covers, "Why aren't you sleeping."

"I can't."

"Can't or Won't?"

"I can't wake up screaming again, not with Zoe here."

Adam pulled her into his arms, "You have to sleep. You haven't been sleeping enough as it is. I'm right here, you will be fine." He placed a soft kiss to her forehead, "Just close your eyes."

"I love you."

"I love you."

Kim woke the next morning peacefully, for the first time in over a week. She reached for Adam only to find the bed empty, and the sound of laughter filling her ears.

"Morning, sleepy head." A smiling Adam said from his place by the stove. Zoe was sitting at the table, drinking orange juice.

"Morning," She said kissing Zoe's head before digging through her backpack, "You need to take your medication, Zo."

Zoe accepted the medication from her aunt, quickly swallowing it and taking another sip of juice, "We are having pancakes!"

"Chocolate chip pancakes," An excited Adam corrected, giving Kim a quick kiss, "How'd you sleep?"

"Really good," She responded as she moved to the fridge and pulled out strawberries. "At least add something healthy to them."

Adam scrunched up his nose, "I don't know, what do you think, Zo?"

"Strawberry chocolate chip pancakes," The girl decided.

"Okay, only if Aunt Kim cuts up the strawberries."

"Deal," Kim agreed.

Adam and Kim made a good team and soon there was a large pile of pancakes for the trio. Kim got the butter and syrup, ignoring Adam's whipped cream request. The three ate breakfast happily before Adam and Kim began to clean up the kitchen, "What do you want to do today?"

"I was thinking ice skating," Kim replied as she put away the butter, "It will be too warm soon."

"Aunt Kim, look outside!"

Adam and Kim looked out the window to find a heavy snow fall, "Too warm huh?"

"I guess we are staying in."

Adam's eyes lit up, "Zoe! Pick out a movie."

Zoe picked out Frozen. The three settled down on the couch with popcorn, with Adam said was mandatory when watching a movie, and hot chocolate, which Adam also insisted was mandatory during a snow storm.

When the movie ended Kim insisted that Zoe had to get dressed before her mom got back. Kim went around the apartment packing up Zoe's stuff while Adam sang the songs from the movie.

Adam's solo was cut short by the doorbell, "Zoe your mom is here." Kim opened the door to her sister, "Hey, Michelle."

"Isn't it a bit late for pajamas?" She asked as she moved into the apartment.

"Not when you're having a movie day."

"Adam," Michelle greeted smiling when her daughter came running into the room, her plush puffer fish under her arm, "Hello, sweetie!"

"Hey, Mom!"

"Did you have fun?"

"It was awesome!"

"Good," Michelle smiled, "Thanks again, I'll talk to you later." Michelle hugged her sister, "Let's go, sweetie."

Zoe headed to the door waving, "Bye, thank you Aunt Kim and Uncle Adam."

The little girl walked passed her mother and into the hallway, oblivious to the shocked state she had left the three adults. Finally Michelle spoke, "Well, it seems at least Zoe approves."

Kim waved as her sister and niece disappeared behind the corner before turning to Adam, "I'm sorry."

"Nonsense, I like being Uncle Adam."

Kim smiled as she walked over into his arms, "You were great, thank you."

"Anytime," He smiled, kissing the top of her head.

"So great, I think you deserve a reward."

"To the bedroom?"

"Yes," She said as he picked her up.

"Yes!"
