The world was falling apart, right before their eyes. Angels were killing each other, and not to mention the apocalypse being around the corner, they never knew when their last moment together would be. So tonight, Sam was holding the archangel in his arms and trying not to think about the war against Lucifer that would be going down exactly the next day, he tried to ignore it and just focus on Gabriel. The angel that he'd fallen in love with, the angel who he probably won't ever see again after tonight, it was just so...surreal.
It took every bit of strength Sam had not to break down sobbing right then and there, because he wanted to, he wanted to cry, anyone in their right mind would cry if they were in the situation he was in.
"Sammy?" Gabriel said softly, taking Sam's hand in his own and interlocking their fingers. Sam looked down at the golden eyed angel, and smiled sadly. There was so much he wanted to tell Gabriel, so many unspoken words that needed to be confessed, so much he could never fit in a single sentence. And telling Gabriel all of those words would shock Sam back into reality and remind him that this is most likely the last time he's able to hold the angel ever again, it was all just too heart breakingly real, and there was nothing either of them could do to stop it.
"I love you, so much." Sam whispered shakily, gently tilting the angels chin up and connecting their lips. The kiss was slow and sweet, full of love and emotion. Both of them wished it could of lasted forever, but they eventually had to pull away. Sam kept his fore head resting against the angels, and kept their eyes locked.
"I love you too, Sammy." Gabriel leaned upward and kissed Sam once more. Sam held onto the archangel even tighter, almost as if he'd disappear into thin air if he dared to let go.
"I don't want to leave you, Sam." Gabriel whimpered, burying his head in the crook of Sam's neck, feeling fresh, hot tears begin spilling from his eyes. Sam could also feel tears blur his vision, but he blinked them back and breathed in a long strip of air.
"I don't want you to either." Sam said, running his fingers through the angels light brown hair, trying to soothe him and calm him down.
"I love you, I always will." Gabriel choked out.
"I love you too." Sam said, voice cracking.
They both held onto the other for the rest of the night. Neither of them getting a wink of sleep, just trying to make every last moment together count, and it all did. Because it would be the last they'd ever get to see each other again.
Reality is the harshest thing to have to accept in a lifetime.
