I own nothing related to The Mentalist. This is for the fun and enjoyment of those who read it.

She was free.

For once, she was free of all responsibility.

Oh, the demotion hurt. It hurt a lot. She still couldn't believe it, her, Teresa Lisbon, had been demoted. Her. Oh, it hurt, it stung, and she was shocked, annoyed, and over all: She didn't have to deal with Jane anymore.

She was free!

Of all Patrick's antics, she always had to be on top of him. Where are you going? What are you doing? Patrick. For once she didn't have to worry herself about him. Oh, she still worried, he was loose in a hospital for crying out loud, and who knew what he could get himself into?

But she wasn't responsible for his actions.

She was free!

Sitting in a waiting room chair, Teresa flipped through a magazine as Jane's voice came over the loudspeaker.

"Doctor Watson to exam room three."

She didn't want to know what he was up to, and for once, she didn't have to. Patrick Jane was Cho's responsibility now, and she was ecstatic.

Cho.

What did he have that she didn't? Why had LaRoche demoted her, and given her job to Cho? Sure, he was an effective team leader, smart, capable, but it still stung her when one of her team members called out, 'Boss!', and they weren't calling for her. No, she was now just a subordinate.

Just a simple member of the team.

A clog in the clockwork.

Why had she been demoted?

It annoyed her to no end, but she decided as long as she wasn't in charge, she might enjoy herself a bit. It had been a nice change to be able to say, 'Oh, I'm not in charge of him.' Ah, the beauty of being a subordinate. She wasn't in charge of Jane, she wasn't in charge of his actions, of controlling him, of always having to keep an eye on him.

She wasn't in charge of him!

She was free.

But still...

She had been demoted, and she couldn't believe it. It was weird, she wasn't in charge. She wasn't the leader, and Cho had replaced her. She couldn't relax, no matter how much she wanted to, because she was slightly obsessed with why she'd been demoted. She could pretend to be perfectly fine, but it still hurt.

Special Agent Teresa Lisbon shook her head. She might not be in charge, but she still had to solve Dr. Micah Newton's murder. She couldn't wallow in pity when she had a homicide to solve, his head had been bashed in for crying out loud. She might not be in charge, but she still had a job to do.

And first off, she had to go hunt down Jane.

Ah, the joys of being Patrick's babysitter.
