White Day.
Or at least that's what Natsumi assumed that morning as she sat up in her bed, sleepy.
Perhaps it was because she had been dreaming about it all night. Perhaps it was because, as she glanced up at her calendar, the date was circled and labeled as such. Or perhaps it was because under her window, the little red froggy was repeating the two words over and over like a broken record. Or a very conflicted… something-or-other, but Natsumi's perceptiveness wasn't broad enough to fill in the blank.
Well, whatever the reason, it was getting annoying. She wondered if he even knew that her window was open and that she could hear every little syllable. Natsumi stood up off her bed and yawned, letting her heavy comforter slip carelessly down her body. It was too late for her to swivel around and grab it, because it was already slipping out the window. She heard a "thud" as it fell to the ground.
"Ow!" someone shouted. It was Giroro.
Natsumi groaned. "I don't understand why this keeps happening!" she insisted to no one in particular. "I swear, I don't know who put those rocks in my blankets again! SORRY, GIRORO!" she yelled over the windowsill.
"No… problem…!" the little corporal heaved from down below.
Natsumi quickly dressed into her school uniform and darted down to Fuyuki's room to awaken her brother. He had a bad habit of sleeping in on the important days—Oh, and all the rest, too.
"Wake up, Fuyuki!" said Natsumi, shaking her brother in bed. "You'll want to get up early to give Momoka those chocolates."
Fuyuki yawned and sat up in bed. "Huh…? What chocolates…?" he asked groggily.
"Uh…" Natsumi shuffled around in her pocket and brought out a box of chocolates she had specially gotten for Fuyuki to give to Momoka. "These." She moved them toward him forcefully, trying to get the message across. It was out of pity for Momoka that she was doing this. She felt so sorry for the girl, falling for someone so dense and all. She couldn't even believe she was related to someone so dense, that Fuyuki. Seriously, it was completely obvious that she liked him! How could he NOT get the message?
(Speak for yourself, Natsumi-chan.)
"Shut up," Natsumi growled.
"Sis?" asked Fuyuki, taken aback. She blushed, embarrassed that she had said something like that aloud, and that Fuyuki had caught her and misinterpreted.
(It's okay, Natsumi-chan. I'm all in your head… all in your head….)
Natsumi covered her ears, shaking her head violently. "Well, then, get out!"
"O-okay!" Fuyuki whimpered.
"Arg… NO! Fuyuki, I didn't mean to…. Ugh." Natsumi groaned in frustration. Narrators were horrible things!
Wait… no they're not. I really didn't mean to—That was Natsumi thinking tha… AGH! Forget I said anything. Anyway… moving on.
Natsumi wolfed down her breakfast and happily skipped off to school. She couldn't help but wait in anticipation of the chocolates that were soon to come to her. She was very popular in school, so it only made sense that she would get so many chocolates from so many boys, but there was only one person's chocolates in particular that her heart desired.
Natsumi shut her eyes and giggled. His name echoed in her head like a thousand tiny fireflies. Sabu—
"Natsumi-saaaaaaaaaan!"
…No, that couldn't be right. Wrong name.
She opened her eyes and stared up at a bright and cheerful Koyuki. Oh. That might have explained it.
"Hi, Koyuki-chan! You look cheerful this morning," said Natsumi, grinning.
Koyuki smiled back and handed her something from behind her back. "That's cuz I wanted to give you this, Natsumi-san!" Natsumi reluctantly took the box of chocolates (wait… those couldn't be chocolates!) in her hands. "I made it just for you, with my own goat bacon!"
She sweatdropped, but knew despite her past efforts that it would be useless trying and return the box. "K-Koyuki-chan, this is White Day."
"Uh-huh! And it's like Valentines Day!" the little ninja girl chirped.
"Yes. Where boys give chocolates to girls. Boys," clarified Natsumi.
"…Yeah? So?"
Natsumi placed a hand on Koyuki's shoulder and stared into her eyes. "Koyuki-chan—You're not a boy."
Koyuki's eyes drifted downward as tears began welling up in her eyes. "I know that," she muttered. "I just wanted to give you chocolates!"
"No. Boys give chocolates to girls they like. As in MORE than friends." Koyuki's mouth opened in hope. "We're just friends," Natsumi finished. Koyuki looked down again. Somewhere far off in a dark basement, Natsumi almost thought she heard heard a pair of glasses crack.
Thus, the friendly walk to school was silent. …Awkwardly silent. But in the end, they arrived there nevertheless.
Natsumi scooted into her seat just as the final bell rang. The smile on her face quickly fell as she realized the flaw in her plan. If Saburo were to give her chocolates, he'd have to be in school.
School. The one place a Saburo would never go.
And it was where she was right now. Why? Why did things have to be so twisted all the time? Her life was supposed to be some romantic tale, not some weird, convoluted comedy. With frogs, not to mention. Alien frogs. So what if it didn't have to do with the topic at hand? Right now, Natsumi was feeling angry, so of course she'd bring up her other problems in her thoughts. And with the power of spacing out, the first half of school passed like a badly-written scene change. Before she knew it, it was already lunch break. Where were we, again? Ah, yes. Natsumi was busy being angry at the platoon for nothing in particular. Stupid alien frogs… screwing up her life constantly. I bet it's because of them that Saburo-senpai isn't coming to school, she thought.
(…No, I don't think that's it. You… really like blaming people, don't you?)
"I told you, shut up already! I don't need you constantly watching my life!" she barked.
"Natsumi-san?" Yayoi blinked at her, frightened. "Wh-who are you yelling at?"
Natsumi fell dead silent. There was no way her friend would believe her if she told her that a narrator haunted her constant thoughts. That would be just plain weird and creepy.
Luckily, thanks to Satsuki the action was broken up. "Natsumi-san! Here are chocolates for you!"
"Uh… thanks?" she said, accepting them. It was too weird. This was the second time a girl had given her chocolates today.
"Natsumi-san, I have chocolates for you too!" a boy said to her, blushily handing her a box of chocolates.
Another box of chocolates was shoved up to her. "Take mine, too!"
"Here are my chocolates, too!" some blond guy told her.
The first boy looked over at him. "Hey… you don't go to our school."
"Yes I do! Now shut up so I can give Natsumi these chocolates!" he shouted back. Natsumi accepted them wordlessly. Satisfied, he left through the window.
"Take my chocolates, too!" another guy said. She took them in her hand and added it to the pile.
Natsumi sighed. "Wow… six chocolates already this morning." I wonder if I'll get any from Saburo-senpai on my way home, she sighed, blushing.
"Natsumi…." Yayoi poked her in the shoulder. "I know that look. That's the I'm fantasizing about Saburo-senpai again look, isn't it?"
"N-no, it's not!" she denied.
"Suuure it isn't." Yayoi smirked evilly.
Natsumi's eyes widened. "Oh, no. You aren't going to give me chocolates too, are you?"
"Nah," she said." Natsumi let out her breath.
The rest of the school day, compared to lunch break, was boring. All Natsumi could think about was how excited she was for Saburo to give her chocolates. In her fantasy, Saburo would stop her on her way home from school. On his face would be a faint line of blush. He would shuffle his feet nervously, his hands behind his back in obvious concealation of what was to come.
"N-Natsumi-chan!" he'd say, to get her attention. Like it wasn't already on him.
Natsumi would turn to him gracefully, just as much blush on her face as his. "Y-yes, Saburo-senpai?" she'd ask gingerly.
Saburo would hold out the cute little box to her, a gesture that hinted she should take it. Natsumi would hold open her hands for the chocolate box to fall in. "I—I wanted to… to show you how I feel," he would say.
"S-Saburo-senpai…." Natsumi would blush again and wipe something from her eyes. "Thank you!" Then she'd thrust her arms around him, sobbing happily. They'd start dating and eventually he'd propose to her. And then they would abandon the stupid frogs and live in some super romantic county, like… England or something. As long as it was away from all the frogs, a happy end.
Until the bell rang, tearing her from her fantasy.
"Awwww, man!" she moaned. Natsumi sighed and slung her extra-heavy schoolbag over her shoulder.
Koyuki bounced up to her. "Natsumi-san! Are we walking home together?"
She shook her head and gave her a wink. "Not today, Koyuki. You know why."
Her eyes darted to her, agast. "Wait… how'd you know about the bullet wound?"
"What… bullet… wound?" asked Natsumi.
Koyuki's eyes flitted away. "Oh, nothing. Haha. Forget I ever said anything."
"Ooookaaaay," she said, a little weirded out.
The two girls parted their separate ways, Koyuki to leap to her little cottage with Dororo, and Natsumi to walk home. Very. Slowly. Deliberately slow, so that if a certain gray-haired boy might wander by…. Waiting… waiting….
"Natsumi-chan!" a voice called. Natsumi's heart leapt to her throat in joy. It was him! It was really him!
Natsumi swerved around to see Saburo at last, her face warm with happiness and relief. For a second there, she thought he'd never come.
"Y-yes, S-Saburo-senpai?" she asked.
Saburo leaned forward, which Natsumi questioned until she heard him panting. He must have run very quickly, she thought. How sweet! He really DOES care about me! Awwwww…!
Once he had regained his composure, Saburo leaned forward, delicately taking Natsumi's chin in his hand. "Natsumi," he whispered, staring into her eyes. He handed forward a box. "…will you please accept these chocolates?"
Natsumi couldn't believe it. It was almost straight out of a romance film. Those words… how poetic! "Yes," she breathed. "I do—uh… I mean, I will!"
"That's good to know." Saburo gave her the chocolates and threw his arms around her. For a second, Natsumi couldn't believe it. He was hugging her. Actually true-to-honest hugging her! Her eyes fluttered closed, and she felt herself drifting toward a place better than heaven. Saburo took his arms off her.
"Cool, whatever. Have a nice day. Bye!" And with a wave over his shoulder, he was gone as fast as a Keroro making Angol Mois do his chores.
Natsumi sighed in bliss, her schoolbag drooping over her shoulder. She lifted it back up and gathered her senses. That was odd… it was feeling rather light. She peered inside it and almost gasped. All her previous chocolates, besides Saburo's… were gone! Her wallet, too. That couldn't have just been a coincidence.
She shrugged it off. Oh, well. Must have dropped them on the way here or something. It would eventually come back, like it always did whenever her wallet got stolen… also whenever she was around Saburo, for some reason. And was it just her, or did Saburo's box of chocolates feel especially heavy, like it was filled with rocks or something? Hm. Go figure.
Despite all this, Natsumi continued skipping home. She opened the gate to her house and stepped in, immediately greeted by Giroro as he absentmindedly polished a weapon of his by a small bonfire.
"Natsumi! Uh… h-hi…" said Giroro. He cleared his throat and turned away to hide the fact that his skin had changed a few shades of colors, all the way from dark red to a bright pink.
Wow, color-changing skin, thought Natsumi, who noticed it anyway (because it was still pretty obvious). I want that!
"S-so, uh… you're home early," he said to her. She found herself wondering why he said this, because it obviously wasn't true. She'd gotten home at her regular time. "W-want a s-s-s-s-sweet p-potato?" he stuttered, and held up a sweet potato to show her that one was already prepared and awaiting her consumption.
Natsumi grinned. "Yes! Oh, Giroro, you're the best!" she giggled, then mentally added, After Saburo-senpai, of course.
She dropped her schoolbag by the door and went to go sit down with the little red froggy. He immediately scooted away from her, like she had a contagious disease lurking within her or something. Giroro picked up the sweet potato by its stick and handed it to her.
Natsumi narrowed her eyes, confused, as she took the sweet potato in her hands—and also a box of chocolates. Okay, now things were getting weird. Well, weirder.
"Um, haha… Giroro?" she said. Giroro looked at her, then looked away. She held up the box of chocolates and shook them in the air a little. "What are these?"
Suddenly, his eyes widened. Giroro leapt up off his seat and waved his hands frantically in front of him. "I—I JUST HAPPENED TO FIND THEM IN THE… THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET, THAT'S ALL! YEAH! IT'S NOT LIKE I DELIBERATELY WENT TO GET YOU CHOCOLATES OR ANYTHING, NO! NOT AT ALL! COMPLETE COINCIDENCE, OKAY?" he said all in one breath.
Natsumi slowly blinked back at him from her half-eaten sweet potato. "Huh? Say that again? You were talking too fast."
"I—" Giroro face-palmed in exasperation. Natsumi couldn't help but giggle. A word popped into her head as she watched his little scene. Cute.
She quickly gobbled down the rest of her sweet potato and gave one last giggle. "Well, I've got to go to my room and do my homework now, okay? And it's all right, I know you don't really understand Pekoponian traditions and that giving a girl chocolates on White Day means you like her, so don't worry. 'Kay?" Natsumi flipped him a smile over her shoulder and proceeded to her room. Giroro slumped in despair.
"You're impossible, sweetheart…" he said under his breath as she left.
Natsumi opened the door and flipped her shoes off, humming to herself a catchy tune called "Excellent Love Love Blues" or something like that. It was a love song between two people, but as for who those two people were, she never bothered to learn. It was just kind of catchy and stuck in her head. She had just made it to the bottom of the staircase when the floor started making weird noises. She cocked her eyebrow as Kululu came spinning up, but there was something… different about him today. He almost looked serious, for some reason. She waited in silence for what he was going to say, or do, to her.
"What do you want?" she muttered. "Here to torment me again?"
Kululu stared back in silence. He didn't even laugh. Now she knew something was definitely up.
"Well?" She tilted her head to the side, bothered by this prolonged wait. Angrily, she tried to plow past him, but he only blocked her path. "Seriously, what do you want, you little creeper?"
Kululu looked away—almost embarrassedly, it appeared. He took out something from behind his back. Natsumi focused her eyes on it and gasped. No way. It couldn't be. But it was.
A box of chocolates.
But why? Unlike Giroro, Kululu knew about Pekoponian traditions. (Angolian too, which was a little weird….)
"I wanted… to give you this," he said rather quietly. His voice, without its creepy quirk, was smooth and handsome-sounding. And sincere. But also serious. Natsumi's mind spun, searching for the answer. It couldn't be true. No, it wasn't right.
"But Kululu, you have a crush on Gi—"
"On Giroro? Yes, I know that you think that. But…" Kululu looked at her suddenly, sincerity in his eyes. It was just then that Natsumi realized… this guy was for real. And serious. "…all this time, I've… I've been merely using him to get close to… close to the one whom I truly…" He shut his eyes as the blush over came his face. "…whom I truly care about! Okay? I… I…" He opened his eyes at her. Natsumi saw them a glistening green behind the swirliness of his glasses. "…I care about you, N-Natsumi." Kululu moved closer to her lips and looked her in the eye. What he said next was barely a whisper. "I… I love you."
Natsumi blushed, her eyes nervously darting back and forth. No, it couldn't be true. But was it? Maybe it was. Maybe he was actually telling the truth. Maybe…. But why? Why would he ever like her? Kululu didn't actually go for those types of girls, did her?
Kululu stared back at her, waiting for her response. Would she accept? Or turn him down? Secretly, deep down inside, he clung to the hope that she'd accept, that they'd live happily together. It had been so long that he'd been hiding his feelings… and now he was letting them loose. But what did Natsumi think? He certainly hoped she wasn't disguisted.
And then, just then, Natsumi did something she hated for all eternity. For a moment, just one impulsive moment, she even considered it. She considered if she should accept, if it could actually work out. Her eyes widened as she realized the possibilities. He could get me closer to Saburo-senpai! she thought. Sucking in her breath, Natsumi stared the little yellow frog down.
"Kululu… I accept," she said.
Kululu blinked a moment. Natsumi couldn't tell, of course, thanks to the glasses. A smile spread across his face. A real one, not one of those creepy grins. He breathed a sigh of relief through his nose… wherever it was. "That's a relief," he said. "I was so worried you'd reject me or something."
Suddenly, Natsumi felt that what she was doing was wrong. He… he really cares about me that much? No, really? she thought. So… is what I'm doing… I'm using him for my own benefit? I mean, I know I've always hated Kululu, but… what if he actually has feelings? And I'm… neglecting them…? Her eyebrows met each other in sadness. Maybe I should actually give this guy a chance… just this once. He…. He deserves it.
Kululu silently walked away, looking satisfied yet also overcome with joy. He took the door to Fuyuki's room and vanished. Natsumi let out the breath she'd been holding. Now, what to do about—
Kululu suddenly banged the door open. "KUKUKU! Just kidding! Did I do a good Giroro impression?"
Natsumi's eyes widened, and then were overtook with anger. He took warning of this sign and hastily shut the door right as Natsumi's foot slammed on it. From in Fuyuki's room, he winced. That could have well been his face. "KULULU! YOU DIRTY LITTLE RAT, I'LL KILL YOU FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE UNTIL YOU'RE DEAD!" she screeched at him from outside.
"Kukuku, Operation: Manipulate Natsumi's Feelings, success," he told himself. He pressed a button that popped up out of nowhere and spun back into the floor.
Fuyuki put down his book. "Huh…? Was that just Kululu?" he wondered.
Natsumi angrily stormed back into her room. On her desk, something caught her eye. Her wallet. Just like she'd suspected, someone would bring it back. She bit down on her lip. Oh, no, what if it's been Kululu all this time? she wondered in fear. …Nah, it can't be. Kululu doesn't HAVE feelings.
Kululu walked up to his array of computers and sat himself down into his office chair. With a small movement of the mouse, the monitors popped up, showing the events around Natsumi that happened that day. He focused in on the panel of Giroro handing Natsumi chocolates. Kukuku… darn that old man, he beat me, thought Kululu. Even though I've technically never made any efforts in the past, but…. I'm sure things will work out. He reached out his hand for the plate of curry that was not there. Oh, kukuku. That's right. If I'm correct, she should be coming in with it riiiiight… nooow.
Just then, the door to the lab burst open and in walked Angol Mois. "Kululu-san!" she called. "The curry's done!"
"Kukuku, oh, good. Will you please set it right there on that tray?" he asked her.
"Sure thing!" she said.
"So… your chores fun?"
"Yup! Uncle's so nice to let me do his chores for him," said the Angol girl joyously.
"Ah. Lots of cleaning?"
"Yup!"
"Want some chocolates?"
"Sure—Wait, what?" Angol Mois stared at him confusedly as he handed her the chocolates. "Kululu-san, what are these?"
"Chocolates. I asked you if you wanted any," he answered.
"Oh, okay!" Angol Mois happily accepted the box and popped one of the chocolates into her mouth. "It's so yummy! Tastes just like curry. Did you make them, Kululu-san?" she asked.
"Uh… yeah," he said. "You… know what today is, right?"
"Um…" She thought a moment. "White day, right? Like a dove!"
"Yes, uh… it's a Pekoponian day where guys give chocolates to girls they like," he explained.
"Right! I see," she said, understanding. Kululu relaxed in his chair, contented. She popped another one of the chocolates into her mouth and said, "I'm glad we're such great friends, Kululu-san!"
Kululu hung his head. No, not that. Please not that.
"Not what, Kululu-san?" she asked curiously.
The Friend Card.
And then they all died from an explosion created by the deadly atomic Saburo-bomb.
That was for all of you who skipped to the end. Thanks to you, now everyone has died. Geez, thanks a lot.
Okay. I forgive you. Here's your chance to win back my trust—Find the flaw in the second-to-last sentence.
