We had to take a hearing test in gym class yesterday, so I got inspired to write this! That and I think its fun to write about Chase freaking out. Thanks and enjoy Hearing Test.
Hearing Test
It was time for the annual Mission Creek hearing test. The bionic kids had never really had to take one of those before, but they had no choice. Every student had to participate. There was a long line leading out of the gym, snaking toward a small, soundproof room where the testing was being held.
Adam went in first. He sat down in the hard plastic chair and waited for the administrator to tell him what to do.
"Okay Adam," she said, looking at the paper he had given her where he had written down his name and age, "when you hear the sound, raise your hand on the side where you think the noise came from."
Instead of answering, Adam raised his left hand. When the instructor peered at him, Adam's face broke out in a grin. "What? You told me to raise my hand where I heard the sound coming from."
The administrator rolled her eyes before setting the headphones on the teen's head. This Adam kid wasn't exactly bright. After she started the test, Adam started raising his hands in time with the soft beeps. About halfway through there was a really loud beep, but Adam didn't really mind it. He just raised his hand and kept on going.
By the end of the test, the administrator was a bit shocked that the boy had enough sense to tell which side was left and which was right. After he was done, Adam was set out to call Bree in.
Bree came in and plopped down in the chair, already bored. The test administrator was used to this reaction from the students, so she wasn't all that surprised at Bree's reaction. About ten minutes later Bree stepped out of the soundproof room and started looking for Chase. Once she found him, Chase was sent to the room, which wasn't exactly soundproof to him, and sat down.
The administrator went over the rules quickly before placing the headset on his head. Chase waited a few seconds before the first beep rang in his ear, three times louder to him than it was to anyone else. He had to bite down a grin at that; this test was easy.
About three minutes into the test, Chase was surprised with a severely loud beep in both his ears. He wasn't prepared for it, so it sent a shock of pain through his eardrums. Chase yelled in pain, pulling the headphones off and throwing them across the room. They crashed into the wall with a crunch, breaking into three or four pieces.
The administrator peered down at the teen, wondering what had caused such a drastic reaction. Chase, hands covering his ears, managed to look up and smile weakly, hoping to downplay his reaction.
"What happened?" she asked, helping Chase to his feet.
How was he going to answer? "Uh, the noise!" Chase said. "Yeah, it um, scared me. It was real sudden and I'm not really good with uh, sudden noises."
The administrator didn't seem to buy it completely, but she let it slide. Chase finished his test –with a different set of headphones mind you –and managed to get the highest score on it of anyone in the school. But Chase learned a valuable lesson during that hearing test, one that he would never forget.
Always stay home on hearing test day if you have ultra-sensitive bionic hearing.
This was a lot shorter than what I normally write, but I liked it. Anyway, thanks for reading!
