Chapter 1: New Life

A young colt opened his eyes for the first time. He saw a big blue sky and rolling green hills. He looked closer and saw small creatures in the big blue sky. They twirled and soared with nothing to hold them up. On the rolling green hills he saw bigger creatures running and playing. He realized they looked just like him.

"Momma! Momma where are you?" The young colt tried to stand and something big pushed him up to help.

"Easy my child! Your mothers here just turn around." The young colt turned around to see one of his own kind standing behind him. She was big and beautiful with kind eyes.

"Are you my momma? I hope you are. I want you to be." And the young colt really did want the kind creature to be his mother.

"Yes my child I am your mother. Welcome to the world, to this herd of horses. Come with me, your legs are strong and you must learn to walk." They walked down the hill towards more horses. The colts mother watched him carefully as to make sure he wouldn't fall. But the colt never slipped and looked around in wonder. Life was new for this colt and he was amazed by all of it.

"My you are young and new, this world must be strange to you. Ask me your questions young one." This colts mother was wise and could see the questions forming in his eyes.

"Mother, what are those things in the sky?" The young colt thought that his mother would indeed be wise if she knew this.

"Those are birds my child, they fly in the sky on wings. Their feathers fall down sometimes and make soft beds for us to sleep in." What an amazing mother this colt had!

"What is that green stuff that tickles my hooves and legs? Is it the world's fur?" the colt looked down at the grounds fur. He put his muzzle in the fur and sneezed when it tickled is nose.

"Haha, easy my child! You could call it fur bur we call it grass. It is what feeds us, the meadow horses." As they reached the bottom of the hill the colts mother leaned down and began to graze on the green fur.

"Come my child, you must be hungry. Drink my milk and grow into a strong stallion. You can save your questions for after you have fed and slept a peaceful sleep."

The young colt protested, "But I have one more question! What is that on the edge of our meadow? What are those things?"

"Those are trees and they make up a forest. You must never go there my child promise me this. It is a dangerous place and some colts never come back." The wise mother got a sad look in her eyes as she remembered her first foal, a beautiful filly, that didn't comeback.

"I promise momma, I don't want to leave you anyway." The young colt snuggled close to his wise and beautiful mother and at the time he never did want to leave.

"Thank you my child, now eat and sleep and grow strong."
