I. The Goal
Lily Potter
Sometimes at night, when she finds it impossible to fall asleep, she wonders what the point of it all is. She feels James' breath on her cheek, his arm wrapped around her, and she is filled with an endless desire to just stop fighting. She doesn't think it would be possible for her to live if he was hurt, and he likewise. Yet every day they put their lives on the line, and every moment she worries because today could be the day the unthinkable happens. Today could mark the end of her happiness.
She longs for safety, security, the knowledge that nothing can hurt her, not now or in the future. These thoughts keep her awake at night, wishing their lives weren't in danger and they could cease to be a part of it all. It is a futile wish, because she knows that James would never, ever leave the fight, and neither would she. But still she wishes, because she is starting to lose sight of the point, of their goal. It is impossible to rid the world of evil.
But then she places her hand on her expanding stomach and thinks of the life she is bringing into the world. It will be her child, and she knows that she will fight with the last breath in her body to bring her baby into a world without darkness or evil. And she remembers that she is fighting for them, her children: she is fighting for the future.
