Round two entry for the Fanfiction Idol contest on the HPFF forum.

Not very long I know, but hopefully enjoyable, the stanza prompt is below and the theme is Snape/Lily based after Snape's worst memory.

And I can't stand it

When I'm looking in her eyes

And she's not looking back

It's not a big surprise

Stanza from "Sami" by Darren Criss

They used to be friends, best mates even... well, maybe not she did have some friends who were girls and thus, closer to her than him. But they sat together in class, spent the summer holidays together, long days in the woods or walking around the town.

But now that had all changed. Ever since he'd used that word, she wouldn't even look at him, even when he'd spent hours waiting outside the Griffindor portrait hole in hopes of either catching her or getting her to come out. Instead all he'd received in return for his efforts was feelings of guilt, uselessness and betrayal, coupled with a black eye from Potter, her new boyfriend.

The mere thought of his best friend and only love with his worst enemy (second only to Sirius Black but as the two were inseparable Severus usually gave them both first place) made him sick to his stomach. Though in hindsight, Severus thought he should hardly be surprised. After all, he'd been a complete ass to her - Mudblood? What had he been thinking, even though he had been embarrassed beyond belief, even though she had laughed at Potter's antics, he shouldn't have said that. He shouldn't have.

He'd tried apologizing but she ignored him, so he tried to forget about the event, but again Potter sought to it that Severus wouldn't approach Lily less he want to spend most of the next term in the Hospital Wing. Now, Lily won't look him in the eye, unless it's to glare. She moved to sit away from him in lessons, in favour of her Griffindor friends and Potter. He should have expected it really, but it still hurt him never the less.

It was while he was sat in potions, the one class Lily had been unable to move away from him in (at Slughorn's insistence), that Severus finally lost it.

"Damnit why won't you look at me anymore!" he yelled at Lily, who had leaned over him for the fifth time to take an ingredient rather than simply ask Severus for it.

Lily slowly dragged her gaze up to meet Severus' and the boy felt something inside him shatter. The look of utter hurt and betrayal he saw in her green orbs as well as the intensity of the hatred that flashed in them had Severus taking a step away from the girl.

"Because, Sev," she started, spitting the old nickname out like poison, "every time I do I see more of the slimy git everyone told me you were. Especially when you hang around with those 'Death Eater' kids. What little hope I had that you'd see what you were becoming and change died when you lashed out at me. We were friends, Sev. Friends don't hurt each other."

Her words were like a knife in his heart, slowly twisting as he continued to lock gazes with her. God he wished she'd go back to ignoring him. Avoiding him. Anything to stop the pain he was feeling the longer she glared at him with such a broken look.

"Lily... I-"

"Save it, Sev," she said, cutting him off. "Save it, Snape. I don't want to hear your excuses anymore."

Severus could only stare. Never had she called him by his surname before. He'd lost her, truly lost her now.

They continued for the rest of the lesson in silence until the bell rang. As the students packed away their things, Severus spoke to Lily one last time.

"I'll sit with Blackly next time...Goodbye."

With that Severus left the room, not daring himself to look back.
