Laura's Story
Prologue: Leaving
I put my hand in his. As we walked down the street I could see the tears that began to form in the corner of his eyes. It seemed as if he was trying to hold them back, but to no avail.
"James," I asked, "what's wrong?"
No response.
"Then come on James let's go!"
I tugged on his arm, anxious to leave. I felt pulled back, and landed on the asphalt. I got a bruise from landing, but that didn't matter, not now.
I turned toward James; he was sitting on the ground, I could see now, his eyes were full of sadness and regret.
"I killed her…" he said quietly, "I deserve…to die, Laura."
"I take back what I said, James, you didn't hate her."
"But, she's gone…"
"James, you did it out of love, for her."
"That's what I'd like to believe Laura, but…"
Now he had me crying.
"James, I miss Mary
just as much as you do, but you've got to realize why it happened,
and forgive yourself for it."
"I…I can't"
He wiped a tear from his eye.
I laid an arm on his shoulder.
"I can." I said softly.
