Prompt Ilvermorny

Word count: 542

Ilvermorny is full of Pukwudgies. It's a fact that is accepted by students and staff without question, because that's the way it has been and the way it always will be. Much like Hogwartians, however, Ilvermorny students find the History of Magic lessons to be incredibly dull and many pay little to no attention to the professor. There are very few, therefore, that know how Pukwudgies came to be so numerous in the school and, of those that do, none care enough to find out the full story.

Pukwudgies guard their names like one would a dark secret, but there is one who answers to 'William'. Rumours say that he is the original William who saved the lives of the founders, Isolt and James, and remained their loyal pet (though he would shudder at the title before aiming a poisoned dart in the speaker's direction) for many years. William laughs at the idea, yet he keeps Isolt's statue polished to perfection and lays flowers on her tomb every year. No one really knows who he is, but the other Pukwudgies treat him with the utmost respect, so most inhabitants of the castle follow their lead.

William delights in keeping his identity - his age especially - a secret. As far as anyone knows, he only trusts a select few Pukwudgies whom he has sworn to complete silence. These few love asking William to regale them with tales of his younger days and, whilst he will not admit it, William enjoys remembering the 'good old days' and sharing memories of better times with his friends.

One story he particularly likes is of the night when he returned to Isolt and saved her life, along with the lives of her husband and children. ("In fact," he likes to say, "I'm the reason this school is even here.")

He tells his friends of his heroism and bravery as he launched himself through the window and filled the witch, Gormlaith, with so many poisoned darts that he knocked her clean off her feet. He tells them how Isolt and James fell to their knees in gratitude and tearfully thanked him, begging his forgiveness for not even mentioning his name in over a decade. William, of course, graciously granted his clemency, merciful creature that he is.

(He also loves to tell his fellow Pukwudgies that his valour that day was the reason Pukwudgie House is named so, but only the most gullible believe this as most know that Ilvermorny was founded long before the incident with Gormlaith.)

After his storytelling sessions, William usually retreats to the school entryway, where he remains for some time, carefully polishing Isolt's statue. It's a rare thing for a Pukwudgie to become so attached to a human. Many thought William strange, and becoming senile in his old age, but experience tells them it's best to leave him alone. A poisoned dart sent by a disgruntled Pukwudgie isn't the best way to go.

Too many years to count later, William passes away. Remembering their close bond, the Pukwudgies insist that he is buried alongside his beloved Isolt, and that the statue in the entryway is changed. A month or so later, a new, gleaming Isolt guards Ilvermorny alongside James, William scowling in front of her.
