*****A/N's Note: I wrote this a very long time ago. I was searching my files when I found it. I haven't yet decided if I'm going to keep writing though. It might just stand alone.******

Danika was alone. In a sense, she had always been alone. She lived on her own, ate by herself, contemplated the universe by herself. She was self-independent, and very brilliant. She had the universe in the palm of her hand, yet she did not close her fist around it. she was the definition of wise. She seemed old, but was still very young.

She had long brown hair, piercing blue eyes and pointed ears that identified her as a Vulcan. She wore plain clothes over her slim body. She sat on a beach, her toes playing in the water every time a wave came up. She admired the sunset as she waited for the sun to go down. Then she would be free.

Danika was born August 6, 21 . She lived with her mother and father on a starship. Even when she was young, she had a taste for knowledge. When she learnt to walk, she would stand by the windows and gaze out in the unknown. Her mother was the science officer; her father the engineer. Her mother was Vulcan, her father human. She was the first interspecies child involving a human and the first human child born on that starship.

She was only six when it happened. She had been playing with her friend, Lana Reed, when the ship suddenly shook as if in the grasp of a giant. She was thrown to the floor viciously and Lana fell as well, hitting her head on a nearby table. Danika quickly crawled over to see if Lana was ok. Lana had a scratch on her head, but that was all. Danika, being the oldest of the two, told Lana to stay there while she went to go find her mother.

She ran through the corridors, and onto the turbolift. She reached the bridge to find injured all over. Her mother was nowhere to be found. Danika was not a very emotional child, but now she was worried. Her mother rarely left the bridge while on duty. Danika decided to go find her father. again, she ran through the corridors, looking for her father. she reached engineering only to find that her father wasn't there. There was only one other place to look: Sickbay. When she got there, she found her mother on a bed, unconscious.

The captain and Lt. Reed were standing nearby. She ran over to them.

"What's wrong?" she asked.

"Your mother was thrown from her chair when the energy waves hit," said captain Archer, crouching down to speak to Danika eye to eye, " she'll be fine."

"What about my dad?" Danika asked.

Captain Archer and Lt. Reed exchanged looks.

"Danika," said captain Archer in a soft voice, " Your dad is dead."

Danika shook with shock, then collapsed sobbing into the waiting arms of captain Archer
