N is for Niisan
Rex always idolized his big brother.
When they were just little boys, Rudger would always beat Rex in everything, whether it was running races, catching frogs, doing schoolwork, it didn't matter. Rudger always won.
Not that Rex made it easy for him. He had made it an aspiration to beat his older brother-or if not beat him, be like him. The more he followed him, the more he was convinced that nobody could beat his big brother.
So he would become like his big brother instead.
He followed Rudger through everything, even becoming a scientist in MIDS just like him, working under the renowed Fudo-hakase. Rex thought it was funny that Rudger would work under somebody. He was sure that Rudger would climb above him soon. His big brother was the best, after all.
When the project was going to be shut down, Rex couldn't believe it. Apparently Rudger couldn't believe it either. He was going to go all the way to Peru, across half the world, to try and find a solution. Rex was in awe.
"Shouldn't I come too, niisan?" Secretly, Rex was a little jealous. His brother was doing something that he wouldn't have thought of attempting on his own, something beyond the call of duty to make sure Momentum would work. He was sure that this would propell him to the top of the MIDS ladder.
He didn't want his big brother to go where he couldn't follow.
"No. I don't know what I'll find there. You should stay with Fudo-hakase, help him just in case..." Rudger didn't finish the sentence. Rex didn't want him to. The impossiblity that Rudger wouldn't come back should never have been even thought.
Rudger did come back. And he became the head of the MIDS department, just like Rex thought. He was proud of his big brother.
But he was frightened with what happened next. What was Fudo-hakase saying, about these cards? What was his big brother Rudger saying, about being taken by two gods? (Privately, Rex wasn't surprised that the gods themselves were fighting over his brother. He was that great, in Rex's eyes.) And what did Rudger mean by defeating him? That was impossible.
No, Rex thought. He wouldn't defeat his brother. He couldn't do that.
Instead, he would be just like him.
