Mufassa licked his mate's head as she prepared to deliver their first child. The pain was horrible and there was to be no relief. He had to remain strong he knew as much but the sight of his beloved Sarabi in so much agony tears filled his eyes. He leaned his head to her ear and whispered "it will be worth it"
"Mufassa," Sarabi said, "If I don't make it promise me you will raise our cub with love and not resent him or her for my passing."
"I swear it," Mufassa said.
A fierce pain shook Sarabi's entire body. She cried out and the small raw of a little lioness cub was heard. Mufassia looked to see the most beautiful little cub he'd ever set eyes upon. He could not believe that he was a father.
"Sarabi," he said, "Look at her. She could be you she's so beautiful"
Sarabi who had been just seconds ago roaring in pain was beyond euphoric now. Her husband handed the cub to her.
"She needs a name," he whispered.
"Kiara," Sarabi whispered licking her new lioness cub's face tenderly.
…
"Dad," Simba asked 6 years later, "Why do you hate the hyenas?"
Mufassa sighed deeply.
"It's a long story son," he said, "I don't even remember anymore"
He did remember. He remembered as if it were yesterday. He trembled in rage and sorrow every time he thought about it.
"Dad," Simba asked, "are you alright?"
"I'm fine Simba," Mufassa said nudging him to go play with Nala.
Kiara had been 4 at the time. She was playing with Mufassa and they were rough-housing. He had accidentally caused her to get an injury to her upper leg.
"Oh Kiara I'm sorry princess," he said licking her injury, "It was an accident"
"It wasn't your fault daddy," Kiara said, "How long is it gonna hurt for though?"
"For a little while Kiara," he picked her up in his mouth and carried her to the cave. Later she was resting on a rock and a hyena came over. She pushed Kiara off a rock.
…
And THAT is why Mufassa hates hyenas
