A/N: Do not own, except for Mr and Mrs Jones. Wish I did, though- then S3E4 ending would be different. Story based on a line from S3E2, no real spoilers though. There's been too many sad fics this week, so I thought I'd try and cheer people up with some young Ianto.
"Higher!" Ianto demanded, swinging his legs as hard as he could to try and make the swing go faster. He, along with his sister and father, were in the play park near the estate where they lived. It was a place the two Jones children loved to go after school, and today was no exception.
"No, push me!" Rhiannon protested from the next swing.
Their father, Rhodri Jones, sighed and pushed his seven-year-old son once, before pushing his eight-year-old daughter.
"See," Ianto goaded. "Tad pushed me first."
"Only because you're littler and can't do it yourself."
"Kids." Rhodri rolled his eyes. "Can you two stop arguing for just five minutes?"
"No," came the unanimous reply, before both children began to giggle.
"We've got to go in a few minutes," Rhodri told them as he glanced at his watch. "Your mam will be annoyed if we're late for dinner."
"Push me one more time," Ianto begged. "Really high. Higher than Rhiannon."
"One last push," Rhodri agreed as he pulled the swing back and pushed it as far forward as he could. Ianto, who had released one hand to brush his hair out of his eyes, screamed as he tumbled from the swing and landed with a thud on the tarmac, his leg crushed underneath.
Rhodri's mouth flew open and he ran around to the front of the swing where his son was lying, sobbing, on the floor.
"My leg," he wept. "Tad, my leg. It hurts. It really hurts."
"Can you stand?" Rhodri asked, helping Ianto to his feet but failing as the young boy sobbed in agony.
"I think you broke it!" Ianto shouted at his father. "You pushed me too hard!"
Rhodri was inclined to argue the contrary, but he didn't want to upset his son any more. "Rhiannon, you get off that swing and run straight home. Tell your mam I'm taking Ianto to the hospital."
Rhiannon nodded as she slowed the swing down and jumped off, racing home as fast as she could. Her dark ponytail bobbed as she vanished out of sight. Rhodri bent down and picked Ianto up in his arms.
When they returned from the hospital, several hours later, with a cast on Ianto's leg and crutches in his hands, they were greeted by a very angry Mary Jones.
"Ianto," Mary scolded him. "What have I told you about being careful in the playpark? And now you go and break your leg. Will you finally learn?"
"I didn't break it," Ianto lied. "Tad did."
And nobody was ever told anything different.
