The House of Hades
They were falling.
She knew that if they ever did hit the bottom, it would be certain death.
She knew that they would have a month at the most to find the doors before the monsters tore them apart.
And Annabeth Chase was terrified.
She held on tightly to Percy, making sure that he was still there. He held her too, never wanting to let go. And they watched for any sign of the Doors.
She couldn't see much, somewhat because they were falling very quickly, but mostly because she kept replaying the scene over and over again in her mind: the threads yanking her down, Percy struggling to hold them up, the horrified looks on the faces of their friends as they fell. That was all far away now, a milllion miles above them, and she might never see the surface again.
She winced as a large chunk of asphalt struck her in the arm, leaving what would be a bruize. Percy held her tighter.
All of a sudden, it stopped. They were frozen in midair.
we must be dead, she thought, we must have gotten hit by a car and died instantly, not noticed.
Then she realized something. They could see. Well, she could at least, she wasn't sure about Percy. But she could see. Why? Were people allowed to see after they died? Or were they still alive? And if they were still alive, why weren't they falling anymore?
She opened her mouth to talk to Percy for comfort in this time of distress- not knowing the answer to any of her questions was a nightmare- only to find that he wasn't in her arms anymore.
"Percy,"she called," Percy!"
No answer. She opened her mouth to yell again, but a hand clamped over it, and a voice hissed,"quiet! Do you want them to know we're here?"
She thrashed, not trusting whoever it was attacking her, and was brought to face a familiar ghost.
"Silena?" she gasped.
