They were becoming a problem. Jun refused to go home with any family who wouldn't take Jinpei as well, and he wouldn't go anywhere without her. They were more lenient with Jinpei, him still being barely old enough to tie his shoes. But Jun wasn't getting any younger, and soon she would simply be too old to adopt.

She didn't care, though. "As soon as I'm too old to stay here I'll simply take Jinpei with me and move into a flat of my own," she insisted, even knowing she probably couldn't afford such a venture at her age. And Jinpei would look at her with the most adoring eyes as he clung to her.

Jun was everything to him, the only family he'd ever known. Bandaging his scrapes, reminding him to take his baths, gently telling him no, he coudn't take home the stray baby ducklings he found at the side of the road. On cold nights they would huddle together in her bed to keep warm.

They didn't care what the people at the orphanage said. They were each other's family, no new parents could replace that.

One day, Dr. Kozaburou Nambu came to recruit Jun for his Science Ninja Team. She refused to go with him unless he let Jinpei come too.

He accepted, and they gained a new family. Dr. Nambu, Ken Washio, Joe Asakura, Ryu Nakanishi.

It wasn't the same as depending on only each other. It was better.
