A/N: Just a one shot, unless I somehow get lots of reviews telling me to write more. Which is unlikely.
I know that Lily/James was always going to happen, or Harry would never be there and there'd be no story. However, I've always felt that pang of guilt for Snape and his loss. Lily should've been nicer, and should've realised what an idiot James was. Hehe, small rant there, now to the actual story!

Never would he forgive himself. He'd ruined it-ruined it all. The words had slipped from his mouth mindlessly, through anger and disappointment. How could she leave him? How could she even tolerate that foul idiot? But it didn't matter anymore. Because she'd chosen him. No matter what, Severus was never going to get her back. All because he called her a Mudblood...

Fresh air swept through his long, straggly black hair. The lake was always a good place to sit in times of grief. Whenever Lily was with James, Severus would make his way down to the corner-by a tree surrounded by rocks, where he surely could not be seen. Once again, the Slytherin was mistaken.

First he heard the crunching of the stones beneath her feet, and then her breathing as she knelt beside him. Refusing to look at her, he stared ahead as flame red hair blew in front of his face. Severus couldn't ignore her for much longer, what with the temper that surely came with the colour of her hair... Her sweet, fragranced hair.

'I'm sorry,' the words were almost whispered as the slithered from his mouth. It was surprising that she heard at all, but Lily only reacted after what felt like a year's worth of silence. For a moment, as he heard movement, Severus expected to turn around and see her leave. There was no complaining though-he deserved it, for being a complete and utter arse.

However, she was still there. The red head had shuffled closer to him, sending a shock through his system as her head lay on his arm. Hesitantly turning to look, Severus saw her eyes tightly closed and a firm grip set on his arm. 'I know you are.'

No forgiveness. He wasn't expecting any. 'I'll understand if you never want to speak to me again. You can go and join their little circle of friendship, you can-'

'Oh, shut up, Sev,' Lily Evans giggled, lightly hitting her friend across the head. 'I forgive you. It was a mistake and... and James was being a prat.' Emerald green eyes fixed upon his own, sparkling in the sunlight. She was beautiful... his best friend, his only friend-and he'd risked it all.

'Fancy sharing some of your bravery with me, Lils?' he ran a hand through her hair, honestly longing for the courage that had obviously taken her to Gryffindor. He would've never said those words if he had managed to stick up for himself, and not let anger get the best of him.

'You're brave enough as you are,' she insisted, lightly kissing him on the cheek before letting go of her grasp on his arm. Slowly, she took off again, a grin widening on her face.

Severus Snape watched her go, a light blush rising to his cheeks and a grin forcing itself upon him. Lilly Evans, I am never risking losing you again.
