Author's Note: I wrote this a couple years back... and just today decided, "Well, why not post it on Fanfiction.net?" So I did. Er, yes. The lyrics are from 'Touched', by Vast.

Disclaimer: Escaflowne and its characters do not belong to me. Sigh. 'Touched' is by Vast, and is also not mine. Double sigh.

so much of what you say is true

Hitomi... I miss you
Van Fanel gazed up at the Mystic Moon, at Hitomi's world. He was leaning out of his window in the newly rebuilt palace in Fanelia. The reconstruction of his kingdom was going well, especially with the help of some of the neighboring kingdoms. Van was happy that his home was coming back to life... but he missed Hitomi so much.

i'll never find someone quite like you again
i'll never find someone quite like you like you

My life just isn't the same... she changed it. It would have changed on it's own, of course... but she made it all worthwhile, she had it all work out in the end. So why can't we be together?
He knew the answer. She had her family and her friends... she had a life on her world. And he had his kingdom, his home to rebuild. Neither could just abandon their responsibilies.

the razors and the dying roses plead
i don't leave you alone
the demigods and hungry ghosts
god god knows i'm not at home

But even knowing that, Van couldn't help but miss her. It felt like they would never see each other again, beyond the occasional glimpses into Hitomi's world with her pendant. She seemed happy when he saw her, but she also seemed a bit sad. As if she missed something. When she saw him, however, she always brightened up.
Van didn't know, but the way Hitomi looked mirrored the way he did. Luckily for both of them, people around them were either too busy or too flighty to notice... since neither of them wanted to be asked questions. Neither of them wanted the pain of parting to become fresh in their hearts again.

i'll never find someone quite like you again
i'll never find someone quite like you again

Maybe... maybe someday... I hope, maybe someday... I'll be able to see her again, able to touch her again.
Van knew his wish most likely wouldn't come true. Hitomi would grow up, finish school, and perhaps get married to one of the men on her world and start a family.
His heart clenched painfully at the thought of losing her to another. It hadn't hurt him this much when he'd thought that Allen and Hitomi were in love... but then, he hadn't been totally sure of his own feelings at that time. Now he was. And now, the thought of that happening was like the pain of a breaking heart.
No. It was the pain of a breaking heart.

i looked into your eyes and saw
a world that does not exist
i looked into your eyes and saw
a world i wish i was in

The young king of Fanelia closed his eyes and thought of his love. Hitomi was beautiful. She wasn't beautiful in the way Millerna was, the beauty that was obvious from the moment you set eyes one her. Hitomi's was a quiet beauty. She was the kind of person who could inspire you with a few well-placed words, and calm you from a rage with a touch. She was beautiful in a natural way, full of love and strength. And to Van, nothing was more beautiful then Hitomi.

i'll never find someone quite as touched as you
i'll never love someone quite the way that i loved you

He stepped back from the window with a sigh and turned toward his bed, climbing between the covers. The light from both moons shone down on Van as he settled comfortably in bed and closed his eyes. As the young man drifted gently into sleep, he whispered two words, words that were unknowingly echoed from the world in the sky, the world his love lived on.
"Maybe someday..."
